Ending Hunger Corps Food Access Vista Job at AmeriCorps
Deer Isle is a remote, rural coastal community of 3,000 where the cost of living is up to 50% above the national average and roughly a third of residents are low-income (at or below 200% of the poverty threshold). In over 30 years of direct community service, access to food has become the most pressing need. Healthy Island Project has built a strong network of programs to feed our community, and the Food Access VISTA will draft grants to fund and develop structure which will expand our capacity. Children and seniors are by far the most vulnerable to economic and food insecurity. In Deer Isle, the issue is exacerbated by rising costs, limited access to public assistance, and our remote distance from food and other basic needs. We work hard to overcome these barriers equitably through targeting outreach primarily to schools and senior hubs and delivering our services directly whenever possible. Currently, we reach almost every child and senior on Deer Isle in some way – including the 96 children (23.5% of all children) and 186 seniors (15.4% of all seniors) living in extreme poverty and hundreds more who are identified as low-income. Access to food banks is extremely limited and our small, initial experiments have been successful in broadening access, increasing fresh foods, and engaging the community served in stocking and distribution of meal kits and food supplies. The Food Access VISTA will address the inequitable food security which affects our remote island community, the most vulnerable being children and seniors living in poverty. The project will build capacity to fund food security programs, including meals, pantry sites, and school-based backpack program.
Member Duties : The population served will be anyone experiencing hunger on Deer Isle. The Food Access VISTA addresses poverty by making HIP more impactful in our food security work by building capacity: 1) to learn who on the island needs increased food access, 2) to build a food security volunteer network, 3) to create visuals and a narrative to communicate HIP’s food security vision, and 4) to increase funding for HIP’s food security initiatives. The Food Access VISTA’s output will be data research and analysis, enabling the development of a robust volunteer network and communications, a strong narrative to drive fundraising, and actual grant writing and fundraising events. The Food Access VISTA’s data will sharpen HIP’s focus, add more volunteers, provide a clear and compelling narrative that will drive increased grants/fundraising around food security.
