JOB SUMMARY:
The Environmental Field Lead is responsible for managing field personnel and activities related to environmental cleanup and investigation projects, primarily in remote Alaska. Personal initiative and critical thinking skills are essential complete job duties with minimal guidance. Assignments are deadline driven so must be able to set priorities, take ownership of projects, work efficiently, and provide a consistent level of quality. This position is field facing, with fieldwork primarily performed in the Alaska summer months (May to September) and document support when not in the field.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Conduct and oversee site investigation and assessments in accordance with state and federal regulatory guidelines and as directed by project management staff. Field durations will be up to one month in duration primarily from April to October, with rotations built in for longer duration projects.
- Manage environmental professionals and other technical staff in data collection, site investigation, and evaluation and review of data collected in support of environmental data objectives.
- Collect and interpret field data, review analytical data, determine and ensure contaminant and toxicity levels and provide field consultations as required.
- Prepare technical evaluations of investigated sites using state and federal guidelines.
- Adhere to schedule and financial objectives, controlling time and expenditures to achieve project goals. This includes taking responsibility for their actions and the actions of their team and being able to hold themselves and others accountable for meeting project goals and deadlines.
- Provide scientific and technical guidance, support, coordination, and oversight to project staff preparing written project documentation.
- Review and document the processes necessary to obtain environmental permits, licenses, and other requirements necessary to achieve environmental project objectives.
- Review and provide documentation of environmental technical standards, guidelines, policies, and formal regulations to ensure projects meet all appropriate requirements.
- Determine data collection methods to be employed in site surveys and investigations.
- Develop and manage site safety plans. This includes knowledge about safety regulations and procedures and ensuring that their team follows these protocols to maintain a safe work environment.
- Assist in the preparation of Project Work Plans, Health and Safety Plans, Field Reports and Project Reports. Prepare charts or graphs from data samples, providing summary information on the environmental relevance of the data.
- Works in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:
- While this position has no direct reports, it will manage personnel when in the field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Strong management and leadership skills, with the ability to organize and effectively manage and motivate their team. Possess comprehensive knowledge and expertise for conducting environmental fieldwork, as well as relevant technical skills and experience to mentor junior staff.
- Have excellent communication skills to effectively convey information, provide feedback, and maintain open lines of communication with their team and other stakeholders.
- Be able to adapt to changing circumstances and adjust plans and strategies as needed to ensure project success.
- Be able to analyze and solve problems quickly and effectively and make sound decisions. Must be innovative with the ability to look beyond standard solutions.
- Ability to work in a team environment and get along well with a variety of personalities and individuals.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, and must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Strong writing skills are required with the ability to communicate in writing clearly and concisely.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, geology, geoscience, or hydrogeology or an environmental-related field required.
- Meets the requirements for an SSHO under EM 385-1-1 preferred.
- A minimum of five years’ experience with environmental projects, including drilling, logging of soils, well design and installation oversight, and sampling of soil and groundwater required.
- 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations certificate preferred.
- Experience in federal government projects highly desired.
- Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Company’s Driving Policy.
- Ability to pass drug and background screening.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Brice Engineering has a fast-paced multi-tasking office environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. Work is performed outside of the office at indoor and outdoor job sites in addition to office locations. Adaptability regarding schedule and design changes, and occasional overtime for immediate field support or bid processing may be necessary.
