Regular Travel Required Within The Region
Purpose: This position engages with community members to expand environmental health outreach and communication regarding potential lead exposure hazards and resources available to reduce exposure to community members and their families. The Navigator works in the Community Services and Planning Unit within the Division of Environmental Health at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one or small group outreach to members of various Michigan communities by providing health protective information and resources via communication at homes, community events, meetings, and other venues throughout Michigan.
- Participate in scheduled meetings (remotely or in-person) with MDHHS and partner agencies.
- Accurately complete and submit documentation/forms on outreach activities and outcomes.
- Assist with program-related projects and activities as needed.
- Complete general administrative duties as needed.
- Maintains a positive, strong, credible, professional, and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant to MDHHS and Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI) projects and represents the best interest of MDHHS and MPHI at all times.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher. A degree in communications, public health, community health services, health promotion or community outreach/engagement is preferred.
Experience: No experience required. 3 plus years of experience conducting field work including outreach and community engagement, case management and/or working with residents to provide education, identify support needs, and problem solving is preferred.

- Basic knowledge or willingness to learn basics of toxicology, risk communication, health education, environmental health, and/or chemical exposure.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
- Organizational skills.
- Ability to speak English and Spanish strongly preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Physical requirements consistent with a standard office environment. Items and supplies can be bulky and weigh up to 40lbs. May go door-to-door to educate residents. May be exposed to hot, cold, or wet weather conditions.
Requires valid vehicle operator’s license and travel within the State, including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnights. Less frequently, travel may be required outside the State.
While the position is remote and field-based, candidate must reside within West Michigan.
Attendance at meetings and events outside of the assigned workspace will be required. Some activities or events may be held outside of typical business hours or on weekends.
Travel: This position will require regular travel. Travel to Lansing, MI to meet with team and collect supplies may be required on an occasional basis (at least quarterly).
Responsibility for the Work of Others: No assigned responsibility.
Impact on Projects, Services, and Operations:
This position is funded by a limited term project plan (two years). The person in this position interacts with the public via meetings, telephone conversations, door-to-door outreach, and events.
