Position Summary
The KRRB Environmental Programs Worker II assists with city recycling programs, illegal dumpsite and litter removal, community beautification programs, and special events consistent with department programming. In addition, the Environmental Programs Worker may provide guidance and leadership to program volunteers and court-ordered Community Service Workers.
Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job
Education / higher education: High school senior, high school diploma or GED is required.
Other requirements: Must be between the ages of 17 and 25
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: none
Education and/or experience preferences: One year work experience as a lead or staff supervisor is preferred. Prior experience in the areas of recycling, beautification or litter control is beneficial.

Driver’s License requirement: Frequent Driver - Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job
Knowledge: Application of some knowledge of recyclable materials. Knowledge of emergency procedures, First Aid and CPR.
Skills: Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Effective verbal, listening and communications skills. Time management and prioritization skills.
Abilities: Ability to lead a team and/or group of volunteers and community service leaders. Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions. Ability to interact with public and communicate basic program information. Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing word processing and spreadsheet applications. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to work independently.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Works with Waste Program Specialist and Community Services Coordinator on routine tasks and assignments. Maintains harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. Presents a courteous and friendly image for the general public, public officials, and program participants and volunteers.
Authorities and Accountabilities
Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures
Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: None - Position has no accountability for, or authority to make, budgetary or financial decisions.
Span of control: Leadership of program volunteers, community service workers and peers.
Essential Functions
The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Lead court-ordered Community Service Workers, when assigned.
- Collects, sorts, and segregates recyclables for processing.
- Collects and transports recyclables from offices and facilities.
- Maintains program logs for recycling, litter, illegal dumpsites removals.
- Leads program volunteers and court-ordered Community Service Workers in the field.
- Removes litter and illegal dumping from local public property, open spaces, parks, and during assigned Litter Free Events.
- Assists with community beautification programs to include tree plantings, landscape projects and urban forestry initiatives.
- Assists in preparing supplies and materials for programs and special events; preparation of program materials, publicity; registration, facility set-up and breakdown.
- Assists the Community Service Coordinator and Waste Program Specialist with environmental programs education and outreach.
- Prepares supply inventories and spreadsheets.
- Responsible for weekly program vehicle inspections.

Exposures: Exposure to sharp objects including razor blades or hypodermic needles.
