This position is located in Lincoln with possible assignments in Ashland
Hours: Monday through Friday; 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
This is a professional position assisting the Water Quality Specialist and Manager of Laboratory Services adhere to the USEPA Lead and Copper Rule Revisions and other Safe Drinking Water Act regulations. This position facilitates and performs sampling and testing for drinking water compliance programs (including Lead and Copper Rule and Total Coliform Rule) and non-compliance drinking water quality projects. Sampling and testing are conducted in a variety of settings including City property, private homes and businesses, schools, and other locations within the City of Lincoln Water System. This position works with the public regarding water quality education, public participation in Lead and Copper Rule activities, and consumer water quality inquiries. Duties also include development and maintenance of City’s water service line records and laboratory data.
This position may include working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
State of Nebraska Water Operator Certification/License is desired.
- Facilitates and performs compliance and non-compliance sampling and testing at various locations including City property, homes, businesses, schools, childcare facilities, other community buildings and within the Water System as required.
- Facilitates lead-in-water mitigation programs including appropriate responses to lead plumbing disturbances as required for regulatory compliance.
- Facilitates public education of water quality and awareness of lead-in-water including working with community members, creating and distributing public education and awareness materials, and responding to consumer inquiries.
- Responds to consumer water quality complaints and test results; visits homes, businesses, and other community buildings to assess possible causes of water quality issues.
- Assists with development and maintenance of the City’s water service line inventory records utilizing spreadsheet, GIS or asset management software.
- Assists in service line pipe material verification and maintaining a public-facing dashboard.
- Documents water quality sample information and results, lead mitigation actions, public education, interactions with consumers, and other actions related to water quality or lead-in-water using various software and reporting forms.
- Selects and monitors sample sites to ensure they are meeting compliance and other water quality programs’ criteria and objectives.
- Monitors results and reports to supervisor any results that should warrant further investigation.
- Assists with analytical field equipment calibration and maintenance.
- Assists with data reporting in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Assists in other activities to improve and maintain water quality such as optimizing flushing programs, sampling and testing water from fire hydrants, auto-flushers, and surface water.
- Obtains a Nebraska Water Operator Grade 4 License within 12 months of employment.
- Presents water quality information to City Staff or the public as required.
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in environmental science or technology, chemistry, biology, geology, hydrology, engineering or closely related field and two years of experience at a professional level in an environmental laboratory; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills.
To be eligible for insurance benefits, employees must work at least 30 hours per week.
To be eligible for the retirement plan, employees must work at least 20 hours per week.
Temporary, seasonal, and unclassified employees are not eligible for benefits.
