Summary
John Carroll University’s alumni are widely recognized throughout the United States for their passion and commitment to their alma mater. The Executive Director of Alumni Engagement is responsible for the planning and implementation of programs that strategically engage over 45,000 alumni and friends in strengthening their life-long relationships with the University in order to enhance the bonds for mutual benefit.
Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Executive Director of Alumni Engagement is an integral member of the leadership of the university advancement division and is a senior member of the management team. The Executive Director of Alumni Engagement helps align the interests, ambitions, and strategic priorities of John Carroll University with those of its alumni, students, parents, and friends.
The Executive Director of Alumni Engagement is responsible for strategic leadership and direction of all activities within the Office of Alumni Relations including the establishment and management of strategic priorities, setting annual goals, policies and procedures, monitoring and evaluating alumni engagement program effectiveness, and effecting changes required for improvement.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and implements strategic programs for involvement and engagement in key university priorities including fundraising, advisory boards, student recruitment, and career networking.
- Provides leadership and support on initiatives and projects that build relationships with a wide range of alumni and friends, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally who make up the growing John Carroll University community.
- Leads the content development and production of the Onward alumni magazine, web postings, and online updates about alumni and their impact on the world.
- Researches program trends for service and revenue potential and makes recommendations to the Vice President of University Advancement and other senior level University leaders.
- Sets department budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with University goals.
- Communicates with staff, volunteers, alumni, friends, and decision-leaders via direct contact, email blasts, alumni web pages, and print publications to build the University’s mission, reputation, and visibility.
- Defines and monitors benchmarks, metrics, and other tools to evaluate department programs.
- Maintains an organizational structure and staffing to accomplish department and division goals and objectives; includes the recruitment, hiring, training, mentoring, and evaluation of alumni relations staff.
- Liaison and ex-officio member of the John Carroll University Alumni Association Board including the recruitment, selection, and communications for this board.
- Manages a portfolio of donors in support of key fundraising initiatives.
- Provides oversight of alumni activities including reunion, homecoming, alumni medal selection and ceremony, alumni networking, golf classic, young alumni programs, alumni service, and alumni communications.
- Partners with the Enrollment Management Division to assist alumni volunteers and outreach in admissions programs. Develops and implements a strong legacy enrollment strategy and implementation.
- Collaborates closely with development colleagues to increase support from alumni and families, communicates development-related activities at alumni events, and attendance at prospect management meetings.
- Provides leads and support to the major gifts officers in their efforts to seek and secure gifts and grants.
- Serves on university committees as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Ten years’ experience in alumni relations, advancement, external affairs, or similar areas with demonstrated accomplishments in fostering productive relationships and developing volunteer leadership.
- Ability to affirm and embrace John Carroll University’s Jesuit, Catholic mission.
- Demonstrated philanthropic values and a commitment to service.
- Superior written and oral communication skills, exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff, faculty, students, volunteers and donors.
- Outstanding organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, professional demeanor, a strong work ethic, enthusiasm, and confidence.
- Demonstrated experience with budget preparation, fiscal management and utilization of customer relationship management software.
- Demonstrated ability to speak and write persuasively about higher education and a deep understanding and appreciation of the Jesuit Catholic tradition.
- Commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and teamwork.
- Must be able to travel around the region and to other areas of the country as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of John Carroll University and strong relationships with institutional benefactors and University leadership.
- Development experience in higher education.
- Master’s degree or Ph.D.
- Prior experience with Technolutions Slate CRM.
Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions
The positions works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. This position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations, including required evening and weekend work.
Physical Requirements
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
