UNM Medical Group, Inc. is hiring for a Family Peer Support Worker to join our Behavioral Health Clinic. This opportunity is a full time day shift opening located in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

Summary:

Under general supervision, provides support services to parents and primary caregivers of children who are receiving services through the agency. Experience in navigating child-serving systems such as mental health services, special education, juvenile justice, child protective services, etc... This individual is responsible for offering unique expertise and experience based on their own experience navigating child serving systems.

Minimum Job Requirements of a Family Peer Support Worker:

High school diploma or GED; State of New Mexico Certification as a Family Peer Support Worker or ability to obtain certification within nine (9) months from date of hire. Verification of education and licensure (if applicable) will be required if selected for hire.

Eligibility for the State of New Mexico Certification as a Family Peer Support Worker:

  • To be eligible for State of NM Certification, applicants must have “lived” experience raising a child with social, emotional, behavioral mental health, or mental health with co-occurring substance use/misuse, or developmental disability challenges diagnosed prior to the age of 18 – and - “lived” experience as the parent/caregiver navigating child-servicing systems such as mental health services, special education, juvenile justice, child protective services, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Family Peer Support Worker:

  • Teaches primary caregivers how to effectively navigate complex service delivery systems including juvenile justice, child protective services, education, physical health, behavioral health, and how to access services and access barriers.
  • Informs primary caregivers of service options; explains their differences and purposes for informed decision-making; and explains relevant terms and conditions related to service options.
  • Assists primary caregivers in meeting the child’s educational needs through written requests for special education and other evaluations and attending education related meetings.
  • Assists parents in crisis response and stabilization as needed.
  • Empowers primary caregivers to effectively build upon their child’s strengths through role modeling of persuasive self-advocacy skills and facilitating collaborative working relationships with professionals.
  • Promotes primary caregiver participation in meetings and other service delivery processes.
  • Supports primary caregivers to build skills and self-efficacy, while modeling effective personal interactions and behavior and parenting skills.
  • Assists primary caregivers in identifying their strengths and resiliencies in order to effectively articulate those strengths and prioritize their needs.
  • Assists primary caregivers in identifying community and natural resources, and engaging resources as part of their team.
  • Prepares primary caregivers for juvenile justice preliminary inquiries, meetings and hearings.
  • Maintains verbal or written communication on behalf of families with physical health and behavioral health providers, Juvenile Probation Officers, Protective Service Specialists, Education Administrators, Community Support Specialists or other providers as needed.
  • Procures signed Releases of Information from primary caregivers to ensure parents, legal guardians, and other primary caregivers have permission to acquire assessments and records or to communicate with other agencies or organizations.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
