The Birdfoot Festival is looking for a Festival Assistant to join our small team in the lead up to the 2023 Birdfoot Festival in March. This part-time, contract position will be responsible for assisting the Executive Director in festival planning, implementation, and wrap-up. This is a multi-faceted administrative position that includes various production assistant tasks. We are looking for someone who thinks and works creatively and collaboratively. The ideal candidate is organized, self-motivated, and interested in strengthening existing skill sets or learning new ones.

Birdfoot’s playful and engaging performances connect the timeless themes of classic masterpieces with contemporary sounds, creating unforgettable musical journeys. Drawing inspiration from New Orleans’ musical traditions, Birdfoot’s international music festival each May draws artists and audiences from across the nation and six continents. Now celebrating its tenth season, the festival’s annual programming includes artist residencies, its award-winning Young Artist Program for local students, and multiple performances and events in communities throughout the city.
Birdfoot Festival is a season of music-making that explores our entwined relationship with the natural world from March 10-18, 2023. At the heart of Birdfoot 2023 is a musical pilgrimage that reaches beyond the concert hall to celebrate the mythic dimensions of nature, bear witness to environmental injustices, and meditate on our place in the world.
Festival Assistant Responsibilities and desired qualifications:
Position Specifics:
- Start Date: Jan 1, with some flexibility
- Above average hourly rate compensation commensurate with experience, starting rate at $18/hr
- Hybrid in-person/work from home. This position is located in New Orleans, LA and requires in-person work here in New Orleans for the lead-up to and during the festival in March. There is no relocation funding available.
- Flexible work schedule, approx. 40 hours a month for the ramp up to the festival and close-out (Jan. to March/April 2023)
- Must be able to work ¾ to full time during increased scheduling for duration of Festival (March 4th - March 19th)
- Must have valid driver’s license and available transportation
Pre-Festival responsibilities may include:
- Working closely with the Executive Director on festival production planning
- Volunteer recruitment
- Plan and secure festival artist travel/accommodation
- Oversee data entry and organization, including but not limited to Little Green Light donor software
- Assist with regular administrative tasks (must have access to computer and phone)
- Grant research
- Website maintenance and Social Media management
- Drafting press releases and other marketing tasks
- Correspond with sponsors and suppliers
Festival Responsibilities may include:
- Working closely with the Executive Direction on festival implementation
- Oversee event load-in/load out
- Coordinate ticket sales and tracking
- Volunteer Coordination
- Festival Artist transportation and logistics
Post-Festival Responsibilities may include:
- Oversee data entry and organization
- Invoicing and wrap-up
Essential Qualifications:
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Excellent writing skills
- Collaborative spirit and creative approach to challenges
- Problem-solving abilities
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to supervise and delegate to volunteers
- Strong computer skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) or Google Workspace
- Physical ability to lift at least 20 lbs and the endurance for long hours in an active production setting
- Strong interest or experience working on live events or festivals
Ideal Candidates have experience in one or more of the following:
- Little Green Light or other donor management software
- Volunteer Coordination
- Event planning
- Grant writing
- Experience as either Non-profit Development assistant, OR as producer's Assistant, Production Assistant. Internship experience in event production, or related experience is acceptable.
