NATURE OF WORK:
Performs specialized field and office work in fire prevention with responsibility for enforcement of fire safety codes, laws, and ordinances. Employees in this classification supplement the Fire Life Safety & Prevention Division. Work may include assisting with inspection of commercial buildings to insure compliance. Main focus of duties will include: staffing of special events, occupancy checks of recreational establishments, fire watch, crowd manager, or other fire prevention and compliance duties as assigned by the Fire Marshal. Initiative, discernment and judgment must be exercised to recognize fire hazards and acquire code compliance. Excellent customer service skills expected and required. Field work exposes employee to varying weather conditions, chemicals, noxious fumes, insects, heights and confined areas. Work is performed under general supervision, according to established guidelines.

Examples of Duties

  • Inspect buildings to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations and unsafe conditions
  • Inspect properties that store, handle, and use hazardous materials to ensure compliance with laws codes and regulations
  • Identify corrective actions necessary to bring properties into compliance with applicable fire codes laws regulations and standards. Communicate corrective measures to public
  • Support Special events (must be able to work some weekends)
  • Be able to work at night and conduct exit checks at local business
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours a month
  • Support additional Fire Prevention duties as assigned by the Fire Marshal or designee

Minimum Requirements

High School Graduate or equivalent, fire prevention or related field required; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess a current State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector Certification from the State of Florida Fire Marshal and a valid Florida driver's license and maintain both in good standings. Background check which includes a polygraph required.

VALID DRIVER LICENSE FROM ANY STATE MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF INTERVIEW. FLORIDA DRIVER LICENSE MUST BE PRESENTED WITHIN 30 DAYS OF EMPLOYMENT.
