Position Summary: The Fuels Crew Supervisor implements wildland fuels management projects for forest health, wildland fire safety, cultural burns, and prescribed burn preparations. The Crew Supervisor will work towards building a Wildland Fire Module Type II crew. While this objective will take several seasons, the first season will focus on training the crew and obtaining burn qualifications while implementing land management projects and practices. Under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief, the Fuels Crew Supervisor will direct the crew in fuels management operations, including reporting and community education. The nature of this work requires considerable initiative and independent judgment in the performance of duties. The position supervises a group of subordinates performing fuels management activities with responsibilities that include: safety, discipline, management, coordination of daily activities, performance evaluations of personnel, and proper maintenance of workstations and all apparatus, equipment, and inventory.

Tasks:

  • Communicates with the Fire Chief on processing applicants, maintaining current employee data, and all other matters of the standard business interface.
  • Assists with the recruitment of qualified applicants for all positions as necessary.
  • Provides support and direction on organizational changes, structure, and efficiencies.
  • Supervises, commands, and reviews the work and operations of 4-20 crew

Members.

  • Evaluates fire and hazardous situations and determine appropriate fire training needs while implementing fuel management projects.
  • Implements fuel management projects with attention to accuracy, detail, and safety.
  • Train crew personnel and others in fuels management techniques, forest health, equipment uses and safety, and wildland firefighting techniques.
  • Supervises the cleaning and maintenance of the workstation, apparatus, equipment, PPE, and supplies.
  • Ensure all operators are trained and proficient in using equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Orders supplies when necessary.
  • Seeks to resolve any disciplinary issues of employees. Informs Supervisor of status and assists in preparation of performance evaluations and corrective actions.
  • Approve crew time for each employee and record crew time for work assignments and accurate work documentation.
  • Reviews qualifications and recommends selection of seasonal crew members.
  • Communicates and enforces department and standard operating procedures
  • Attends meetings and undertakes special projects as assigned. Prepares and presents oral and written reports when assigned.
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • May perform duties of the Supervisor in their absence
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Qualified as Crew Boss (CRWB) or Engine Boss (ENGB), Firing Boss (FIRB), and able to maintain National Wildfire Coordinating Group qualifications.
  • Possession of a valid California class C driver’s license.
  • Minimum requirement Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 3 (RXB3).

Experience and Education

  • Three or more years of experience in forestry, fuels management, fire suppression, or a closely related field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Must be able to influence and adapt communications to diverse audiences.
  • Must be able to build a solid, cohesive crew.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills with associates, subordinates, vendors, and employees.
  • A physical examination is required every year. In addition, a fitness for duty exam may be required when appropriate.
  • Ability to pass wildland fire physical fitness qualification test (pack test – arduous – or program equivalent) within two weeks of appointment and maintain fitness qualification on at least an annual basis to retain NWCG Red Card Qualifications per PMS 310-1
  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Maintain physical ability and stamina to meet position tasks and responsibilities, which include as a minimum: vision good enough to drive vehicles, specifications, fine print, and visual display terminals; hearing well enough to identify mechanical noises, converse on the radio, telephone and in person over incident noise; bodily mobility in limited access areas, maintain balance on narrow platforms, drive vehicles and be able to maneuver in uneven terrain and under adverse weather conditions; employees must be able to lift equipment more than 65 lbs.
