Job Title: Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)

Department: Skilled Nursing

Reports to: Charge Nurse and DSD

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

CNA LICENSE: Current, Required

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • A Certified Nurse Assistant is responsible for the direct care of the group of residents assigned, and provides the activities of daily living care, including ADL documentation, and psycho-social services.
  • To assist or supervise residents with physical needs such as bathing, dressing, shaving, feeding, oral hygiene, active and passive exercises, use of bathroom and peri-care, enemas or any other physical need.
  • To take and record vital signs such as TPR’s, BP’s and weights.
  • To immediately report to the charge nurse any unusual symptom or changes in behavior.
  • To chart on assigned residents daily and to do summary charting weekly.
  • To assist with activity program as needed, such as encouraging residents to participate and assistance in getting the residents to and from the proper area at the proper time.
  • To keep the resident’s area clean and neat at all times.
  • To encourage the resident to function at his/her maximum level of ability at all times.
  • To assist with re-motivation and re-socialization programs such as range of motion exercises and showing keen interest in the resident as an individual and in his/her interests.
  • To perform resident checks as necessary, to maintain skin care, to position resident to insure comfort and resident safety.
  • To continuously support the nursing program in a positive constructive manner.
  • To assist with housekeeping as necessary.
  • To participate in ongoing in-service educational programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Age eighteen or age sixteen with work permit.
  • License showing successful completion of the Nurse’s Aide Training Program or successful completion of the training program within 3 months of hire.
  • Previous experience is desirable, but not mandatory.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • A genuine interest in the geriatric resident.
  • Must have the ability to use own initiative and follow instructions.
  • Must be a responsible and trustworthy person.
  • Must exhibit tolerance and understanding.
  • Must be dependable, prompt in reporting on duty, and cooperative with schedule changes.
  • Should have good basic knowledge of self.
  • Must maintain neat and clean appearance and grooming.

Specific Physical Requirements:

Note: The term “occasionally” is used to represent up to ⅓ of the time in a given workday “frequently” represents ⅓ - ⅔ of the time; and “constantly” represents ⅔ or more of the time.

  • Standing/Walking: On feet constantly, standing and walking more than of the time in a normal workday.
  • Sitting: Occasionally, for approximately 1 - 2 hours per day while charting or while feeding residents.
  • Lift and Carry up to 50 lbs.: Occasionally required to lift medical charts, supplies, residents’ personal items, soiled and clean linens, or transferring a resident. Two aides are typically utilized when lifting or transferring a resident and/or using a mechanical lift.
  • Pushing/Pulling: Frequently. Performs a variety of pushing/pulling activities in the course of her job such as pushing residents in geriatric chairs and wheelchairs to bathroom, activities, meals; Pushes bins or carts with soiled laundry and clean linens from laundry room; Turns and rolls residents in bed when changing linens or clothes, or when repositioning residents to make them more comfortable.
  • Bending/Stooping: Frequently. Bends or stoops while bathing, dressing and grooming residents; turning residents in bed; making beds and changing linens; filling linen cart; feeding residents; scrubbing bathtub; etc.
  • Kneeling/Squatting: Infrequently, for example, when wiping up spills, putting on shoes and socks, picking up items from floor, etc.
  • Twisting/Turning: Occasionally may twist and turn at the waist while transferring, dressing, or bathing residents, feeding residents, making beds, scrubbing bathtub, maneuvering carts, etc.
  • Reaching: Arms and hands are held below shoulder level more than of the day while caring for the residents in their beds, in their wheelchairs, in the bathtub, etc. Infrequently reaches at or above shoulder level to obtain supplies (pillows, blankets, etc.) from an upper shelf.
  • Grasping/Manipulating: Constant use of both hands is required to care for the residents and includes a combination of hand and finger activities. Flexion and extension of the wrists when changing and making beds, dressing residents, rolling residents, etc. Cylindrical grasp when pushing wheelchairs, lifts, laundry carts, etc. Palmar and lateral grasp when charting. Tip grasp and fine finger dexterity to button, snap, zip, etc.
