General Summary
All graduate assistants are required to enroll in a major ensemble appropriate for their applied area every semester they hold an assistantship. The ensemble placement will be determined by audition in the primary applied area.
The majority of the graduate teaching assistant's primary duties are in support of instruction, including but not limited to the responsibilities below:
1. Serve as a primary or secondary teaching instructor in a class or laboratory
2. Assist a faculty member with teaching-related tasks
3. Grade student assignments which require knowledge of subjects taught in a class or laboratory
4. Meet with and/or tutor students, hold office hours, prepare instructional materials, and assist during class and/or lab, etc.
For this position, the specific Teaching Assistant duties may include but are not limited to:
1. Instruction of music minors/studio overload
2. Assist with Percussion Techniques Class and Master Class
3. Drum set instruction at all levels
4. Assist with the ISU Big Red Marching Machine Drum line
5. Conduct and coach Percussion Ensemble
6. Assist with administrative aspects of a comprehensive Percussion Program
7. Percussion instrument maintenance and supervision
8. Classroom teaching
9. Other duties as assigned, depending on the candidate's interests and experience and School of Music needs.
Required Qualifications
1. Eligible for appointment as per the requirements in the Graduate Assistant Handbook which can be found at https://hr.illinoisstate.edu/downloads/GA_Handbook.pdf
2. Must be a degree seeking graduate student in the School of Music at Illinois State University.
3. For teaching assistant positions, state law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position.

You must be eligible for employment in the United States and at Illinois State University and/or for the number of hours required for the position.
Illinois State University student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of on-campus employment for all positions held. International students are restricted by their visa status to no more than 20 hours per week of on-campus employment when the university is in session but may work up to 28 hours per week when the university is not in session.
