Job Summary:

Receives and prepares samples for pathological examination. Assists in the gross examination and dissection of simple anatomic pathology specimens. Performs testing following established procedures. Correlates knowledge and understanding of theory and technical elements of testing to solve problems and answers questions effectively and efficiently. Performs clinical laboratory procedures and examinations which require exercise of independent judgment and which are performed under the supervision of a pathologists' assistant, laboratory manager/supervisor, or director of a clinical laboratory.

Education/Qualifications:Prerequisites include an Associate's Degree in Histology from an accredited Histology program, or professional training programs offered through either the military service of the United States or the military service of the state, which may, where applicable, be accepted by the NYS Education Department for licensing purposes as equivalent education or training in lieu of all or part of an approved program.Candidates must be qualified as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histotechnician in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations. Licensure by NYS SED or licensure eligible with a limited permit or limited license as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histotechnician.Limited Permit is granted to individuals that meet the educational requirements for licensure except for the licensing examination which must be taken within one year from the issuance of a limited permit. Limited License is granted to individuals who are working in the lab completing the education and examination requirements necessary to be licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technician or Histotechnician. Limited licenses cannot be renewed and will not be valid beyond September 1, 2016Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in standard laboratory methodologies required. Previous Clinical Laboratory experience preferred. Licensure/Certificates:Must have one of the following licenses:Licensure by NYS SED as a Clinical Laboratory Technician Licensure by NYS SED as a Certified Histological Technician Licensure by NYS SED as a Clinical Laboratory TechnologistScope of Practice:Individuals are required to practice within the responsibilities of their license, and perform specific tasks for which they have been deemed competent.Skills:Requires the ability to provide high quality laboratory service in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Demonstrates good communication skills, the ability to organize and prioritize workload and work with minimal supervision. Must be able to prioritize work, write clearly, and use sound judgment. Strong telephone and communication skills are required.Physical Requirements:Position requires prolonged standing or sitting. Must be able to push/pull and lift supplies/reagents/equipment less than 20 lbs. throughout the day. Must be able to identify and differentiate colors.Must be able to assist moving patients in the morgue. Exposure to infection from disease bearing specimens. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. Subject to radiant energy hazards. Exposed to odorous chemicals and specimens. Exposed to carcinogenic substances.
