Hiring range for this position is $31,200.00 - $35,484.80. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 08.

General Definition of Work:
Performs responsible semiskilled work in a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance assignments; frequently operates specialized and other equipment in connection with the tasks to which assigned; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Mowing, seeding, planting, pruning, trimming, spraying and fertilizing grass, trees, shrubs, bushes, hedges and flowers; performing a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance activities; operating, maintaining and repairing equipment.

• Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of parks, playing fields and other public areas.
• Sows and mows grass; plants, prunes and trims trees, shrubs and bushes.
• Rakes and collects leaves; sprays pesticides.
• Plants flowers; applies fertilizer.
• Maintains and repairs irrigation systems.
• Maintains ball fields; prepares fields for games; ensures fields are ready for games.
• Prepares parks for special events; maintains baseball, softball and football fields; repairs playground equipment.
• Participates in inclement weather operations.
• Edges sidewalks, borders and plant beds; trims weeds, grass and hedges.
• Operates mowers, tractors, dump truck and hand tools in performance of tasks.
• Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used in landscaping grounds maintenance; skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Some experience as a semiskilled worker in grounds maintenance and in the operation of motorized equipment is strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements:
This is medium work requiring exertion in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid "Class A" commercial drivers license (CDL) is desirable; requires pesticide applicators license or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. Some overtime and after hours work is required. Position is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the Drug Free Workplace Policy. Due to the essential nature of this position, worker must be available for contact and on-site assistance in emergency situations.
