This is specialized, coordinative, or supervisory work in institutional services support for State agencies and universities in the area of grounds maintenance and landscaping. Work involves planning and scheduling work, determining and meeting the training needs of staff, and determining labor or material needs for work assignments. Work Schedule and hours
Normal Schedule: Mon. – Fri. 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Hours may be subject to change to 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., during the summer months. Occasional evening/weekend hours in the event of an emergency.

Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Crew Leader: Leading a team to complete and meet scheduled deadlines in a professional manner with expertise. Must be able to communicate schedules and work plans to other staff clearly and efficiently. Must be able to monitor grounds maintenance and inventory and see that assigned equipment is in working order. Ensure that staff is working and operating equipment in a safe and efficient manner. To aid in the enforcement of policies and standards set by the department, institution, and state.
Waste Management: Maintains campus trash and recycling by checking delegated receptacles assigned to Grounds and all loose trash on campus grounds.
Horticultural maintenance: The ability to safely maintain the campus and off-campus accent beds to industry standards. Must wear proper personal protective equipment when performing these duties and must be willing to work on a team or alone under the direction of the landscape supervisor and the manager of landscape services. These duties will often require bending and lifting up to 50lbs.
Turf Maintenance: Maintains campus by the weekly mowing schedule. Makes sure each zone has been mowed, trimmed, edged, and blown in a professional manner. This position is also responsible for turf fertilization, aeration, and herbicide applications to turf. In the off-season, this crew leads the leaf collection across campus and makes sure that all the leaves are blown from sidewalks, patios, parking lots, and turf, collected and removed.
Equipment Maintenance: Routinely inspecting equipment for safety issues, changing the oil and various filters, greasing fittings, sharpening blades, and chains. Routinely washing and cleaning equipment and trucks. Notifying the manager of any safety issues or equipment repairs needed and keeping equipment in safe operational use.
Inclement Weather: All employees are considered essential personnel and are subject to call back, employees are expected to work in severe weather events and campus emergencies. In the need to operate in inclement weather, employees are required to report to work at the designated start time which may be outside normal work hours. Work during these conditions needs to be performed in the safest and most efficient manner possible to have the campus operational for students, faculty, staff, and/or emergency personnel.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from High School or possession of a GED, and one year of experience in the area assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification.
Valid Driver’s License is required.

Preferred Qualifications
At least three (3) years of experience in the areas of turf maintenance, horticulture, and/or arboriculture. Focus on horticulture maintenance.
North Carolina Ornamental and Turf Pesticides license is required (must provide proof of license at interview).
Basic computer skills required (be able to use a mouse, navigate to email, complete online timesheets, digital forms, etc.).

Uses technical knowledge, interpersonal and customer service skills, planning and organizing work skills, and knowledge of and compliance with Federal, State, University, and department safety policies, regulations, and environmental laws to use the appropriate methods to properly maintain turf, plants, flowers, shrubbery, and/or trees to industry standards, along with the ability to operate and maintain standard commercial landscaping equipment safely, efficiently, and properly.
