Athletic Director

DSST Public Schools (DSST) seeks an Athletic Director to join one of the leading charter school organizations in Colorado. DSST Public Schools’ mission is to transform urban public education by eliminating educational inequity and preparing all students for success in college and the 21st century.

Overview of Position:
The Athletic Director is the leader of the Athletics Program at a school or campus. They will direct all aspects of an Athletic Program (both varsity and lifetime) including hiring coaches, scheduling, budget preparation, promotion, and facility management.

Essential Functions:
  • Leadership
    • Provide vision, guidance, and direction for a school’s varsity and lifetime athletics program
    • Be directly in charge of hiring, guidance, professional development, evaluation, leadership, and accountability for coaches
    • Mediate any disputes between athletes, coaches, families, staff, community members, visiting teams and other members who occupy the facilities.
    • Serve as head coach for one sport in each season, building coaching staff and program
    • Supervise on site athletic activities and perform administrative duties
    • Establish a strong relationship with high school and middle school coaches, families, students, staff, media, and community members. Leverage those relationships to maximize athletic program
    • Continue professional growth by attending classes, clinics, workshops, and affiliations with professional organizations
    • Participate in school administrative team decision-making and meetings
  • Culture of Program
    • Maintain an active, highly participatory program that promotes sportsmanship and embodies core values of respect, responsibility, courage, curiosity, integrity, and doing your best both in athletic and academic realm.
    • Work with families, students, teachers, and staff to ensure that students are academically supported and able to balance demands of athletics
    • Work with families, students, teachers, and staff regarding problems of discipline concerning athletics
    • Creates and manages system of accountability for athletes to ensure adherence to school core values, systems and structures.
    • Create a system of due process that is appropriate and consistent across each sport regarding athletic suspensions and expulsions.
    • Plan and develop athletic award and recognition systems for each athletic programs
    • Develop a parent/student/community booster/support group to promote athletics and increase participation and recognition of DSST athletes
    • Develop a written philosophy statement and conduct a preseason meeting with parents and players to discuss acceptable player behavior, practice procedures, substance abuse policy and other guidelines that relate to program management.
  • Financial and Logistical
    • Prepare a budget and allocate spending on items including coaching salaries, team travel, and equipment purchases.
    • Coordinate with internal and external coaches, facility managers, as well as external athletic directors to determine scheduling of games, practices, and weight room/training facilities, and to ensure proper maintenance of facilities for all activities.
    • Responsible for garnering CHSAA membership and maintaining adherence to CHSAA policies.
    • Responsible for obtaining the advertising, information, printing and selling of programs and tickets, and other marketing/promotion for athletic contests
    • Keep monthly calendar of school athletic activities up-to-date and in conjunction with the principal, faculty and student body.
    • Work with home office to create sustainable systems of fundraising to increase athletic budget and resources.
    • Develop a sports specific safety plan.
    • Responsible for the ordering, distribution, inventory, and collection of athletic equipment
    • Maintain and operate school’s Multifunction School Activity Bus (MFSAB) Fleet. This include managing fuel, servicing, scheduling, and cleaning school vehicles.
    • Train and certify school employees and coaches to operate school’s MFSAB for off-campus athletics and school-based excursions.
  • Adherence to policies and guidelines
    • Create an organized, efficient, and timely system for ensuring that student athletes are academically eligible for a given sport
    • Maintain consistent, organized, and thorough records of student eligibility, physical exams, insurance information, release forms, health and safety information, and liability paperwork
    • Ensure that all athletic programs operate in accordance with league rules and guidelines
    • Review with coaches league rules and ensure that coaches do the same with teams and families at the start of season
    • Require all coaches (part-time, volunteer, etc.) to follow the hiring procedure (including first aid and CHSAA certification) and are cleared by Director before beginning coaching
    • Report all rule violations or suspected violations to appropriate individuals and to Director

Additional Duties:
  • Recruit and hire school faculty
  • Serve as a recruiter for new students; actively engage prospective families in an effort to draw more students to choose your school; be willing to take on additional tasks to support recruitment, as needed
  • Participate in network wide Professional Learning Programs.
  • If applicable, teach one course within the school
  • If applicable, act as a student advisor for a group of 12-15 students

Job Requirements: DSST Public Schools seeks candidates with strong character, passion for excellence and a relentless commitment to student achievement.
  • In order to be considered qualified to lead in this role at DSST Public Schools, you will need a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
  • Experience in Sports and People Management
The Athletic Director will become or have been qualified as a Permanent Colorado High School Activities Association Coach, (CHSAA).
  • The Coach will become or have been certified in Adult CPR, First Aid and Concussion Training.
  • The Coach will complete the background check process with DPS (900 Grant Street Denver, Colorado 80203, 303 764 3900) and be cleared by the DSST HR Department.
  • The Coach will continue professional growth by attending classes, clinics, and camps pertaining to the sport.

Vaccine Requirement:
  • Per the public health order made by Denver Department of Public Health and Environment (DDPHE) on August 2, 2021, all personnel of schools must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by September 30, 2021. To comply with the DDPHE Public Health Order, all DSST employees, contractors and volunteers must be fully vaccinated by September 30, 2021. The DDPHE Public Health Order allows employers to consider and, in appropriate circumstances, grant requests for medical and religious accommodations related to the COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $53,550-$60,310 and is commensurate with experience*
  • Final salary may be adjusted based on years of experience in a relevant, aligned role of similar level
and responsibilities up to 10 years of experience.
