Job Summary/Objective:

The purpose of this position is to ensure the cleanliness of public spaces on campus, and inn rooms. Housekeepers play an important role on our campus. They will come in contact with students, employees, and guests and will need to have positive interactions with various people at all times.


Position Type/Expected Work Hours:

Regularly scheduled hours are 6:00 am to 2:30 pm. Occasional overtime on weekends with a rotation basis may be required to meet the needs of the campus community.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Cleaning dorm rooms, classrooms, hallways, elevators, lobbies, stairwells, kitchens, offices, locker rooms, and other specific areas depending on building assigned.
  • Vacuuming/cleaning floors, chair rails, baseboards, ceiling vents, upholstered furniture, window blinds, etc.
  • Mopping VCT tile floors, hardwood floors, tile floors, marble floors, and stairwells.
  • Cleaning, disinfecting, and restocking bathrooms.
  • Cleaning and restocking kitchens, including outside and inside of stoves, microwaves, and refrigerator.
  • Emptying and cleaning trash and recycling receptacles. Taking trash and recycling to outside bins.
  • Cleaning whiteboards, chalkboards, and smartboards.
  • Reporting any needed repairs immediately to Physical Plant or supervisor (such as leaky faucets or toilets, loose tile, clogged toilets or sinks, light bulbs that are out, etc.)
  • Washing interior and exterior windows, glass doors, and mirrors.
  • Cleaning ceiling fans and lights, keeping them bug-free.
  • Keeping an inventory of supplies and paper products needed without over or understocking.
  • Maintaining all supplies and cleaning equipment in a clean, working, and orderly fashion with labels on all chemicals.
  • Cleaning interior walls when needed.
  • Handling various cleaning solvents and chemicals in the correct way set forth by the supervisor, OSHA regulations, EPA, State Health Department, etc.
  • Cleaning within a team of other housekeepers as needed, various times throughout the year.
  • Using light and heavy (industrial type) floor machines and attachments.
  • Operating a GLS machine and a hot water carpet extractor.
  • Moving furniture, supplies, and different equipment when needed.
  • Adjusting, cleaning, and maintaining specialty equipment including floor scrubbers, carpet cleaning machine, etc.
  • Climbing and using 6’ and 8’ ladders.
  • Completing any other work or work orders assigned by supervisor, in a timely manner.
  • Removing mold and mildew when required, using proper safety gear and chemicals.
  • Filling in for absent housekeepers.
  • Performing other related duties, as assigned.


Required Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent


Work Environment:
The worker is normally in an indoor cleaning environment but is expected to travel outdoors to move from one assignment to another. The worker will be handling chemicals and various cleaning instruments including, but not limited to ladders, vacuums, mops, dusters, and brooms.


Physical Demands:

  • Requires full range of body motion, including reaching, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and walking.
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 35lbs.
  • Requires standing/walking for extended periods of time.
  • Must have good vision, with or without corrective devices.
  • Requires traveling to various locations on campus.


Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience in the use of commercial cleaning equipment is preferred.
  • Requires general knowledge of cleaning terms and safety procedures related to hazardous chemicals.
  • Comprehensive, working knowledge of housekeeping methods and procedures, materials, tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read, write and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Well organized and able to prioritize work.
  • Ability to work overtime on a rotating basis when required by your supervisor.
