The Department of Medicine’s Division of Medical Oncology has an dynamic and innovative opportunity for a Human Resources Project Specialist based at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center campus. This position reports to Administrator-Program Operations for the Division of Medical Oncology and works closely with leadership in the Division of Medical Oncology, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, UW Campus, Cancer Care Consortium, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, and external community hospitals in an effort to build and grow efficient and effective operations and research processes that are vital to our mission.
The purpose of this position is to provide staff HR coordination and assistance of systems and processes relating to staff HR including HR project management, employee relations, performance improvement systems. The HR Project Specialist provides confidential support to the Division Associate Administrator- Program Operations and Division Administrator and acts as a liaison, communicating on their behalf with senior management, staff, and colleagues of other agencies and institutions. They will routinely exercise independent judgment and decision-making skills, set their own work priorities, develop, interpret and implement divisional policies for the Division central administration office, and provide direction, expertise, and assistance to Medical Oncology staff located on all the campuses.
The University of Washington's Division of Medical Oncology's includes over 300 faculty members and over 200 staff members located at the UW Medical Center, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Harborview Medical Center, and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. Over the past 25 years, members of the Division have developed the world's leading bone marrow transplant program. In addition, members of the Division have made substantial contributions to many other areas of cancer treatment, including the use of tumor vaccines, cellular therapy for cancer, antibody-based treatments, and novel forms of chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. The Division is deeply committed to maintaining its position as one of the leading centers for research and treatment of cancer in the world.
This position requires substantial organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills, as well as individual initiative and excellent communication skills. This position entails frequent and substantive interactions both within and outside Division and involves sensitive and confidential matters; using good judgment, tact, and discretion are a necessity. This position requires accuracy, efficiency, flexibility, and a desire to serve multiple stakeholders, while working within UW regulations.
This position also requires excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information, and project management skills in a multi-task, high-stress environment. This key assistant position enables the seamless maintenance of the Division’s HR capability, and this permits our staff to successfully compete for grants and contracts that directly impact the reputation and financial health of the Division and the University.

This position is essential to that mission. This position provides significant contributions to human resources, program operations and administrative management for the Division of Medical Oncology.
The Division has as its primary mission: to improve cancer care by moving discoveries made in the laboratory to a clinical setting and finding new and innovative ways to use existing therapies. Our vision is to be national leaders in oncology translational medicine.
The incumbent assists the Associate Administrator of Staff HR in maintaining a successful and compliant staff HR program that provides a critical enabling capability to the Division of Medical Oncology; this permits our faculty and staff to optimally conduct cancer research that has profound importance to our society. This key position enables the seamless maintenance of the Division’s HR capability, which permits our staff to successfully receive the highest level of human resources guidance and support.

The ability to multi-task and be flexible while maintaining a professional demeanor is crucial as priorities change throughout each day. May have to respond to multiple requests for information (e-mail, voicemail, fax, verbal), determining priorities.
There may be meetings or appointments over which an individual has no control that require a flexible schedule in order to accommodate. This position is located in a clinical and research environment that is located at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center campus. This position may include travel between affiliate sites such as UW Medical Center, Harborview and other locations as needed.
