Summary of Duties:
The Control Technician performs preventative maintenance and assists with repairs and installation of new and existing of Heating, Ventilating/Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) equipment and systems on the WSU Spokane Health Science campus. The incumbent may also assist others within the Maintenance Shop in performing general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction duties utilizing skill fields such as electrical work.
Essential Duties:
HVAC Preventative Maintenance: 40%
- Performs preventive maintenance on air handlers, exhaust fans, cooling towers, boilers and related HVAC equipment to include changing filters, lubrication bearing, filling, draining and cleaning cooling towers, and changing belts.
- Operates various test equipment and instruments related to HVAC controls testing and servicing.
Maintenance and Service: 30%
- Performs maintenance of large complex buildings, construction, rebuilding, repairing, and calibrating HVAC equipment and control systems, including electrical, electronic, and hydraulic controls.
- Responds to service calls and takes necessary actions with regard to need for materials or assistance to put systems back into service.
- Analyzes, interprets, and understands data, applying it as needed to operate the systems.
Repairs: 15%
- Assists with repairs, such as replacing motors, large fans, or other equipment.
Maintains Updated Information: 10%
- Keeps abreast of technical changes made by manufacturers and control firms.
- Stay current with standards and codes as they apply to HVAC systems.
Other: 5%
- Other Duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Completion of a two-year approved institution course as a Control Technician Trainee, OR four years of applicable experience in installation, repair, AND maintenance of electrical AND pneumatic control systems. Vocational OR trade school training in control mechanisms may be substituted, year-for-year, for work experience up to a maximum of two years.
Additional Requirements:
- Two years of HVAC preventive maintenance experience or accredited degree in HVAC maintenance.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain by time of hire, a valid unrestricted driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Four years of experience working in commercial or industrial setting performing maintenance on HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
- Washington State 06A electrical license.
- Familiarity with Direct Digital Control (DDC) HVAC control systems such as Siemens, Automated Logic and Invensys HVAC control systems.
- EPA Refrigeration License
- Gas License
- City of Spokane Boiler License
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within a year of hire, a Backflow Assembly Tester certificate.

Monthly Salary: Range 47, $4,425 - $5,136, Step G-M
Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.
