HVAC Mechanic Job at Virginia Dept of General Services
We have two great opportunities for experienced HVAC mechanics to keep our state buildings in outstanding working order.
The Department of General Services, Division of Real Estate & Facilities Management (DREFM), Bureau of Facilities Management (BFM) is a customer-focused organization whose primary function is to provide a quality environment for the approximately 75 state agencies that occupy the facilities overseen by DGS. BFM provides its customers effective and timely operational, maintenance, and repair services. BFM is responsible for over 40 buildings and operates and maintains about 6.45 million square feet of buildings and grounds at the seat of government to include the Governor’s Mansion, the Virginia Capitol and Capitol Square. BFM strives to ensure tenants enjoy a clean, safe, efficient, and comfortable environment in and around the buildings it manages. DGS works closely with the Virginia Division of Capitol Police to ensure this goal is met.
These positions ensure the repair, maintenance & preventive maintenance tasks & guidelines are met with the least amount of disruption to building occupants through exemplary customer service. Our technicians work in a multi-craft team environment within an assigned set of buildings on the Capitol Square. If you are interested, we also have Plumber and Electrician postings available.
This position may require to work some weekends and overtime as needed based on work demands.

Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- Valid Virginia driver’s license
- Experience performing HVAC installation, repair, and maintenance operations.
- EPA CFC refrigerant certified required or must be able to obtain within 6 months of employment
- Knowledge of the principles and methods associated with HVAC installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of HVAC equipment, controls, auxiliary equipment and systems according to BOCA code
- Skilled in the use of hand and power tools and structural and mechanical equipment in the HVAC field
- Knowledge and ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, drawings, specifications & operating manuals
- Ability to work independently as well as a team member. Must have strong communication skills, and able to communicate with various levels of users & occupants of DGS buildings & facilities. Candidate must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to troubleshoot, test, diagnose and repair a wide variety of HVAC, electrical, structural, mechanical & plumbing equipment
- Basic computer skills required such as email
- The candidate must be able to lift at least 50 lbs., reach overhead, bend, kneel, and crouch.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with automated building management systems is preferred.
- Journeyman or Masters card in HVAC preferred.
- Sheetmetal and/or ductwork experience highly preferred.
- Cross-training within other building trades specialties preferred.
