About the Business Unit – Innovative Bakery Resources
Innovative Bakery Resources (IBR), a division of Ardent Mills, is dedicated to the art and science of artisanal bread making at scale. Equal parts bakery facility and think tank, their state-of-the-art facility unites cutting edge concepts with high-touch craftsmanship to help customers quickly commercialize their creations.
Your role:
This position will support the innovation initiatives of Innovative Bakery Resources by working with external and internal stakeholders to execute projects from ‘concept-to-commercialization’, driving use of new ingredients and products into the market.
The R&D Baker has bench-top and production scale experiences in wide range of baking applications. The position will be working closely with multiple customers to support their needs in new product development, cost saving or quality/operations improvement. The R&D Baker will translate business and customer needs into R&D projects to drive customers’ solutions and adoptions in a timely manner, and gain customers’ confidence and trust. This will entail building strong hands-on experiences of Ardent Mills product portfolio; formulating and prototyping; and conducting R&D, pilot, and plant trials.
The R&D Baker must have excellent interpersonal, relationship building and communication skills; and be able to work independently or as part of a cross functional team within Ardent Mills and its customer’s organizations. As one of the team members driving innovation within Innovative Bakery Resources, this individual will partner with cross-functional team (i.e., Sales, Quality, Operations, Supply Chain) to protect and design ‘concept-to-commercialization’ path of new product launches that will provide differentiation and add competitive insulation to Ardent Mills.
This position reports to the Business Development Leader for Innovative Bakery Resources.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Contributes to innovation performing R&D on customer projects
  • Supports planning and execution of experiments starting from the laboratory to pilot and then commercial scale to develop functional solutions with clearly defined process and product specifications
  • Both leads and supports scale-up and commercialization of new solutions
  • Understands and complies with corporate IP policies and procedures and provides technical expertise to the development and protection of intellectual property within project scope
  • Collaborates with Research Quality & Technical Services (RQT) members to support the development and delivery of technical training for internal customers
  • Proactively cultivates a broad network of contacts both within and outside the organization & actively uses network to support execution of Innovative Bakery Resources projects
  • Anticipates customer requirements through internal and external interactions & by staying abreast of trends
  • Promotes a culture of inclusion, collaboration and teamwork across organizational & industry boundaries
Essential Education, Experience, Skills:
  • Preferred Culinary or B.S degree in Food Science, Cereal Science, Baking Science, or job experience demonstrating similar level
  • Relationship builder, people smart, curious, and open minded.
  • Preferred experience in wide array of bakery applications and hands on experience; both bench and production/scale up, including applications such as:
    • Baked Snacks – cookies, crackers, bars, extruded snacks
    • Gluten containing and Gluten free breads, and bread products such as buns, rolls, bagels, etc.
    • Baked Snacks – cookies, crackers, snacks
    • Tortillas, flatbreads
  • Ability to travel up to 10% for business.
  • Demonstrated technical curiosity, creativity, and ability to innovate (implement creativity to reach a business goal).
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, manage and execute multiple technical projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional team
  • High Integrity, positive attitude and flexible working style, able to develop a positive working relationships with others
  • Highly motivated, self-starter, demonstrated ability to learn, not afraid to take on ambiguous tasks
  • Must have good sensory/organoleptic and food presentation skills
  • Must have good computer skills and good oral and written communication skills
  • Must be proactive, flexible with the ability to handle changing priorities, exercise good judgement and discretion on the job
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions (with or without reasonable accommodation):
  • Ability to work with and consume wheat products; i.e. no wheat/gluten allergies, intolerance or sensitivity
  • Able to lift 50lbs and work near extreme temperatures (typical of test kitchen, R&D lab and bakery environment)
Other considerations:
  • Willing to work flexible and extended hours if project work requires such
  • Must be authorized to work in the Unites states without sponsorship now and in the future
