Infection Preventionist Job at Meadowbrook Behavioral Health Center
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
1. The Infection Preventionist must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with current practical or vocational nurse licensure by the State Board of Nursing.
2. The Infection Preventionist (IP) must have primary professional training in nursing, medical technology, microbiology, epidemiology, or other related healthcare field.
3. Must complete specialized training in infection prevention and control.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. The IP will have completed specialized training in infection prevention and control related to long-term care nursing.
B. The individual or individuals will maintain proof of ongoing specialized training in the field of infection control specific to long-term care.
C. The IP will have clinical experience in long-term care nursing.
D. The IP will have a reasonable working knowledge of the principles of epidemiology and infectious diseases.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The IP(s) is responsible for maintaining a system of preventing, identifying, reporting, investigating and controlling infections and communicable diseases for all residents, staff, volunteers, visitors, and other individuals providing services under a contractual arrangement based upon the facility assessment conducted according to §483.80(a). The process will involve:
A. Perform outcome surveillance of residents (and staff, when indicated) reported to have infections by collecting and analyzing and interpreting data documented.
B. Mapping of infections will be done monthly
C. Summarize data for a monthly and quarterly report
D. Review of resident assessments, by facility nurse, for appropriateness of resident’s care with regard to infection control and adherence to isolation policies and procedures according to evidence-based practices.
E. Oversee immunization programs for residents and staff.
F. Create and manage a Process Surveillance Program which audits and monitors as well as documents the infection prevention and control practices of staff and other persons who have contact with residents (including clinicians and outside contractual providers). Areas to monitor are hand hygiene observations, personal protective equipment use, safe injection practices, environmental services, dietary services, and isolation practices.
G. Report back to staff and Quality Assurance meeting member’s compliance rates for hand hygiene process.
H. Perform infection control rounds in facility to examine environmental factors and staff practices which may impact infection control issues
I. Review documentation of nurses and clinicians for thoroughness and accuracy.
J. Review antibiograms with facility nursing staff and report on resistance of organisms at Quality Assurance (QA) meeting.
K. Provide Infection Control In-services to facility staff in conjunction with Director of Staff Development designee.
L. Confirm, investigate, and report outbreaks.
M. Manage and follow-up on employee and resident exposures to infectious diseases.
N. Attend quarterly QA meetings and participate as a member of the Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) committee
