Job Duties

The Staunton District Structure and Bridge section is seeking an Inspector to assist with in-depth visual and mechanical inspections of bridges and highway structures to discover deterioration, damage, and defects that would affect the life, serviceability and safety of the structure.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of common bridge types and components.
• Valid driver's license.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
• Ability to diagnose causes of damage and deterioration to bridges and structures.
• Ability to prepare and, or draft structural drawings and sketches.
• Ability to use specialized inspection instruments and tools.
• Ability to follow safety practices and procedures and use required equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
• Ability to prepare reports, enter data, update and maintain files.
• Knowledge of and skill in the application of engineering math.
• High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for

• Experience in bridge maintenance and repair or experience in structural inspection.
• Experience using a PC to prepare reports, enter data, and maintain databases and files.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Completion of an FHWA-approved course in safety inspection of in-service bridges.
• Associate's degree or coursework in engineering or engineering technology.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Experience in bridge maintenance and repair or structural inspection.
