Iron Worker Job at Hampton Roads Connector Partners
The Hampton Roads Connector Partners JV (HRCP) consisting of Dragados, VINCI, and Flatiron has been selected to construct the $3.3bn Design Build project –the largest civil construction contract ever awarded by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
The project scope across a 9 mile section of the I-64 will include: a new 3.5-mile bridge-tunnel crossing that will accommodate a total of 8 lanes of capacity across the water, replacement of the existing marine approach bridges and the addition of a third lane on I-64 in each direction. The twin 45’ diameter 1.5-mile tunnels will be bored by TBM, creating the second largest TBM tunnel opening for a TBM in North America. The project is expected to continue to the end of 2025.
Job Summary
The Iron Worker is responsible for laying out and fabricating structural steel and sheet metal in order to build metal structures. Welds and cuts steel, interprets blueprints.
Key Responsibilities
- Erecting structural steel frames, bar joist , decking of structures & stairs/handrail. Will erect structural and bolt up
- Build and install iron or steel girders, columns, and other construction materials to form docks or trestle, and other structures.
- Make, weld, and cut structural metal on jobsites, a plus
- Direct operation of cranes to move structural steel, and other materials onto and around the construction site, a plus
- Connect steel columns, beams, and girders.
- Drill holes into steel for bolts.
- Unload and stack steel.
- Attach cables to steel and then to the crane.
- Hoist steel into place in the framework.
- Position steel with connecting bars and spud wrenches.
- Work with drift pins and four pound hammers to align the holes in the steel with the framework holes.
- Use plumb bobs, levels, and laser equipment to check alignment.
- Bolt or weld piece into place.
- Operating forklifts, scissors lifts, boom lifts to erect steel columns, beams and girders according to blueprints, a plus
- Unload and stack prefabricated steel/Assist with Rigging
- Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of steel structures, a plus
- Using torches and welding equipment to cut, bend and weld steel, a plus
- 1-2 years’ experience in heavy civil construction projects preferred
- Attend tool box talks and maintain a safe atmosphere
- Keep site clean and organized, controls quality and tools needed for own work
- Previous experience with, and understanding of, the pile driving process and heavy equipment
- Ability to read and understand a heavy construction plan
- Ability to operate equipment
- Must be able to communicate with others to convey information effectively.
- Must demonstrate attention to details
- Perform additional assignments as needed
Work Requirements
- Must be certified by American Welding Society (AWS) or other similar group.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience preferred
- Must be 18 years in age or older
- Must pass drug screen
- A valid driver’s License preferred
- Strongly prefer candidates with High School Diploma
- Able to work overtime and be flexible with hours (day/night)
- Must be accustomed to working outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions
- Thorough knowledge and working experience of DOT standards and regulations
- Able to communicate effectively with workers and subcontractors

- Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms, legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials
