The City of Norfolk's Department of General Services, Animal Care Center is seeking a Full-Time Kennel Supervisor who will be responsible for supervising all Animal Caretakers, overseeing all incoming animals, managing shelter population, and serving as a front-line supervisor for customer service.
Department Hiring Salary Range: $32,758.00.00 - $37,671.00/annually
Essential Functions
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
Managing all Animal Caretakers to ensure animal care is prompt, thorough and humane.- Creates work schedules and assigns daily duties to Animal Caretakers.
- Provides feedback to caretakers including any necessary progressive disciplinary action and conducts performance evaluations.
- Responsible for ensuring adequate supplies and equipment and coordinates any needed repairs with the Assistant Animal Services Supervisor.
- Oversees all incoming animals and ensures accurate processing and assessment of each animal with regard to shelter placement, temperament, health status, and shelter care plan. • Coordinates behavioral assessments.
- Administers vaccines and medications as directed by the partnering shelter Veterinarian.
- Performs euthanasia as necessary.
- Assists customers and addresses customer concerns.
- Implements employee and volunteer training and growth opportunities.
- Assists the Assistant Animal Services Supervisor and Bureau Manager with writing reports and operating within the confines of the shelter’s budgets.
- Maintains overall shelter organization and cleanliness throughout the workday.
- Provides the highest quality animal care through feeding, watering, socializing, and offering various forms of enrichment.
- Observes animals for signs of illness; monitors sick or injured animals and assists with vet-prescribed treatment.
- Assists the public with animal surrender or locating a lost pet.
- Assists the public with selecting a companion for adoption.
- Requires ability to read and understand standard operating procedures.
- Ability to stand for long periods; to bend, crouch, and/or kneel repeatedly; to lift and carry a minimum 50 pounds.
- Ability to read adoption contracts, registration cards, cage or kennel cards, and medical sheets or prescription dosage on medications for the animals.
- Ability to write adoption contracts, quarantine and euthanasia paperwork, complete registration cards and time slips.
- Ability to perform general math calculations.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

Two years in a kennel environment or an animal care field as a supervisor.
Preferred:
- An Associate’s degree in veterinary technology, veterinary science, animal care or a closely related field.
Additional Information & Requirements
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for new hires. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
This is an Essential position; incumbent will be required to report to work during inclement weather when the City is closed.- Valid Driver's License required.
- Certification in animal euthanasia or ability to be certified within one year of employment.
Work Schedule: Hours are scheduled Sunday through Saturday, 40 hours per week. Hours may require additional flexibility, nights, holidays and weekends.
