    The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology department has an outstanding opportunity for a LAB ASSISTANT (EVENING-SHIFT, PART-TIME)

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The Lab Assistant performs assigned support, pre-technical and semi-technical procedures in the laboratory. This may include but is not limited to: phlebotomy, specimen processing and preparation, and other support tasks to assist in maintaining an efficient, smooth workflow and to prepare specimens for analysis.
    PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
    Performs assigned semi-technical procedures. This may include any of the following or similar duty assignments:
  • Phlebotomy: Obtains specimens from inpatients, outpatients and outreach accounts according to the time guidelines established by the department. (This may include driving to outpatient account locations to obtain the specimen. If so assigned, the “Driving” responsibility below is applicable.)
  • Specimen Processing: Logs tests in the computer, labels, centrifuges, prepares aliquots, and delivers specimens.
  • Reference Lab Sample Preparation: Processes, prepares and ships reference lab samples, according to reference laboratory specifications.
  • Follows laboratory protocols, policies and safely procedures.
  • Answers technical questions relating to laboratory procedures and polices.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems and customer service issues. Examples include: Pending orders and specimen draws; finding lost specimens; add-on tests; scanning specimens into storage application, etc. When unable to resolve issue in a timely manner, asks supervisor or lead for assistance.
  • Reporting: As assigned, locates patient results and generates reports/faxes.
  • Competently uses computers systems (LIS, HIS, etc.)
    Work environment, supplies, equipment, and waste handling includes but not limited to:
  • Maintains a clean and organized working environment. Cleans and prepares work areas.
  • Ensures assigned areas are stocked with appropriate, cost-effective levels of supplies and reagents. Takes inventory and orders supplies when needed. Handles (opens packages, properly stores, etc.) incoming supplies.
  • Maintains assigned equipment according to laboratory procedures.
  • Disposes of specimens and other hazardous wastes safely and appropriately according to established laboratory protocols.
    Support and collaboration includes but not limited to:
  • Assists in training new personnel.
  • Works professionally as part of a team; assists other team members as requested and shares knowledge/expertise.
  • Participates in achieving established Patient Safety and departmental goals and Performance Improvement activities.
  • May be required to drive a hospital-owned vehicle as a function of job. If so required, completes all NWHMC driver clearance procedures and paperwork. Drives carefully and in accordance with the law and NWHMC driving standards. Respects and protects NWHMC property from damage. Promptly reports any accidents, tickets, citations, moving violations, vehicle damage, or suspension/revocation of license in accordance to NWHMC policies and procedures. Maintains a valid Washington Drivers License and clean driving record.

    REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Phlebotomists: Active Washington State issued MA-Phlebotomist Certification required
  • If required to drive as part of job: Valid Washington State driver's license with clean driving record.
  • Relevant experience or training in a clinical laboratory or medical setting, required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in typing and PC based computer skills.
  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology required.
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and customer service skills.
  • Able to organize and prioritize work demands and handle multiple tasks.
  • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and condition of the patients served on assigned unit/department.
