The mission of the Department of Forestry is to engage in teaching, research, and service in forestry to promote the sustainable management of forest resources. The Forestry teaching program seeks to enhance the competency and excellence of the forestry profession.

1. Explore the development of educational plans based on forest ecology and management for delivery to K-12 schoolchildren, high schools, and educators.
2. Receiving training in and/or studying practices, procedures, and equipment related to forestry, including seed collection, seed processing, seed storage, all aspects of nursery production practices, tree seedling planting practices, and tree reproductive biology
3. Assisting with data collection and management, including recording detailed field observations and notes
4. Assisting with summarization of data, interpretation of data, and preparation of reports
5. Assisting with assigned tasks on field research projects, including site preparation and maintenance activities
6. Traveling as needed to support assigned Forestry Department activities

7. Maintaining good relations and communications with collaborating personnel and entities
8. Engage in Forestry student mentoring activities and promotion of the Forestry Program/Club

Education:
Preferred Qualifications
- College student at NMHU and classified as a sophomore, junior, or senior and enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours
- Successfully completed one semester at NMHU;
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Work experience in college
Students currently enrolled in any STEM programs in the Forestry or Biology Departments at NMHU will be preferred. Individuals with prior experience in field research, technical tree climbing, seed collection, seed processing, nursery production environments, and/or tree planting will be preferred. Current NMHU defensive driver training is preferred, but training will be provided if needed. Previous experience working in a field work-related job as NMFWRI will be preferred.
