- Continuous ability to interpret laboratory test requests, and collect and process specimen for laboratory testing.
- Continuous ability to perform and interpret results of the following laboratory procedures:
- Serum or Urine qualitative pregnancy testing.
- Rapid Strep testing
- Urine dipstick testing
- Stool guaiac/Gastro cult
- Continuous ability to perform the following laboratory procedures:
- Setup of microbiology cultures
- Processing specimen for send out to reference laboratory.
- Continuous ability to prepare and organize results of tests performed for review and reporting by the technologist/technician.
- Continuous ability to perform clerical duties for the laboratory.
- Continuous ability to communicate effectively, in person, on phone, in writing or through the laboratory computer.
- Interacts and communicates effectively with other laboratory staff, hospital staff, administrative staff, physicians, outside clinics, patients, patient families and visitors.
- Continuous ability for visual interpretation, including depth, near, far, and color.
- Occasional ability to work other shifts. Frequent ability to work weekends and holidays.
- Continuous attention to detail in specimen collection and clerical work.
- Frequent ability to perform under emergency or stressful situations.
- Continuous ability to operate office equipment and LIS computer.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent, and two years’ experience in the laboratory field as a phlebotomists or extended training as a laboratory assistant.
- Preference will be given to experienced laboratory assistants or phlebotomists registered with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Licenses/Certificates/Permits:
- Must maintain current BCLS certification.
- Requires 7 hours AIDS training.
- Requires Health Care Assistant's license from the State of Washington.
Experience:
- Two years’ experience in the laboratory field as a phlebotomist or extended training as a laboratory assistant – preference will be given to experienced lab assistants.
- Approximately 3 months is required for an experienced lab assistant to become efficient in position.
- Approximately 6 months may be required for a phlebotomist moving into the position of laboratory assistant.
Under the general guidance of the Laboratory Services Director and laboratory medical technologists/technicians, collects and processes specimen for all areas of the laboratory. Performs the majority of the clerical work of the laboratory.
- Continuously collects and processes specimen for all areas of the laboratory.
- Continuously performs laboratory testing to include only those tests deemed as waived under CLIA regulations. Specific tests listed in Skills, Knowledge and Abilities.
- Continuously evaluates quality control and patient results of those tests performed.
- Continuously organizes and prepares results of tests performed for review and reporting by the technologist/technician.
- Continuously performs the clerical duties of the laboratory.
- Consistently monitors and performs daily charge audits and prepares manual charges and credits for billing.
- Consistently performs compliance audits in preparation for review by the Laboratory Supervisor.
- Consistently assists the Laboratory Director in other managerial projects as assigned.
- Consistently demonstrates the ability to understand and react effectively to the unique needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric age groups.
- Performs other related work as required.
