Job Summary
Works with other members of the lab prep team to ready equipment, materials and facilities used for a diverse range of lower division biology courses on the GCC Main campus. Primary responsibilities of this position are in the preparation of materials for multiple microbiology lab sections and in supporting the biotechnology courses and student research projects. Works with faculty in the development of instructional materials and coordination of shared lab schedules; tests and troubleshoots protocols as necessary. Manages inventory of expendable supplies (e.g., chemicals, plastic and glassware, gloves) and places necessary orders in a timely manner. Ensures that equipment and models are routinely cleaned, maintained, and serviced to optimize their operational longevity and support lab instruction when needed. Adheres to laboratory safety procedures (including hazardous waste disposal) such that Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards are met and maintains compliance with district policies and procedures. Engages in professional development activities to stay current on new developments in scientific research, advance technical proficiency, improve management skills and/or explore new trends in science education.
Essential Functions
45% - Organizes and oversees the inventory, acquisition, storage, preparation, cleanliness and operability of laboratory supplies, equipment, specimens, growth media, stains, reagents, solutions and other chemicals and physical space for lower division biology lab courses. Primary responsibilities in areas of microbiology and biotechnology
15% - Provides technical instruction and oversight, mentorship and supervision of student workers assisting in the prep room and biotechnology students working on projects in the research lab
15% - Coordinates with faculty to plan lab schedule for the semester and corresponding preparatory calendar; regularly communicates with teaching faculty, provides technical support/ training as needed and assists in the development of new lab activities
15% - Assists in development and implementation of policies, practices and work standards for laboratory operations. Ensures compliance with safety procedures and best practices
10% - Acquires technical proficiency with new instrumentation and protocols. Troubleshoots technical problems and arranges for professional servicing as necessary. Oversees preventative maintenance to maximize longevity of equipment
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities in area of assignment. An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in microbiology, biotechnology, genetics, cell and molecular biology or related STEM field such as biochemistry
- Four or more years full-time experience preparing college-level lab courses primarily in microbiology and/or biotechnology and/or as a research/clinical lab technician in these fields
- Two or more years’ experience training/mentoring students to work in a lab environment (both student workers assisting with routine lab tasks but also students working on primary research projects)
- Experience with budget management and/or inventory management such as monitoring of expendable lab supplies, purchasing, receiving, and recommending large capital items
- Project management and technical expertise in microbiology (including but not limited to aseptic technique, maintenance of cell cultures, preparation of media, stains and other solutions and planning inoculation schedules to coordinate with instructional needs)
- Proficiency with a wide range of biotechnology techniques (including but not limited to preparing buffered solutions, use of pipettes, microfuge, pH meter, spectrophotometer, microplate reader, and microscopes, gel electrophoresis, prokaryotic and mammalian cell culture, PCR/qPCR, microscopy, immunofluorescence, chromatography)

- Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate’s own expense
