- Understand all federal regulations pertaining to the Migrant Education program.
- Cultivate and maintain working relationships with local schools and preschool programs in order to support the registration and academic success of migrant children in the program.
- Collaborate with families to support their child’s academic achievement, health and well-being.
- Develop community connections with regional programs and resources in order to make referrals to other services that would benefit the family in achieving their goals.
- Mentor youth through completion of high school and establishment of future educational and career goals.
- Measure, coordinate and implement the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program in the areas of Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County. Ensure that migrant children and families within caseload have access to necessary resources so that they can be successful in the schools and community.
- Accurately identify and recruit migrant children in service region to ensure that they receive appropriate services within the various school systems and are well equipped to succeed in school.
- Serve as a liaison for the service area and is a knowledgeable resource, including, but not limited to: the school systems, community agencies, and health centers.
- Provide tutors for students needing supplemental academic help.
- May provide interpreting services and transportation on a case-by-case basis.
- Maintaining student records and data, tracking student progress and communication with the schools about students’ needs.
- The Lead Family Education Specialist (FES), this role will act as a mentor for other FES positions in the program.
- Assist with training new staff in topics specific to FES, such as home visiting, data entry, tracking spreadsheets, etc.
- Fluency in Spanish and English required (oral and written). Candidates will be required to demonstrate fluency in both.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to conduct interviews accurately and skillfully in order to determine eligibility for the program.
- Ability to follow direction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with children, youth, adults, agency professionals, school staff and community members.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Excel at multi-tasking and taking initiative in an independent work environment.
- Knowledge of available local services.
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work preferred.
- Interpretation and translation experience preferred.
- Experience with data entry preferred.
