Library Assistant Job at Delaware State University
DESCRIPTION
BENEFITS
Under the direct supervision of the serials/electronic access librarian or designee, the library assistant is responsible for assisting with all the duties necessary to maintain the Serials Department Hours Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday 2:00 p.m. –10:00 p.m., and Saturday as assigned. Schedule varies during holidays, spring break, summer, and final exams.
The following are the functions essential to performing this job.
1. Copy catalogs in all formats under the supervision of the serials/electronic access librarian and coordinator of technical services utilizing the AACRII, and LC classification rules.
2. Exports, inputs and updates bibliographic records and library holdings (all formats) in the Library Management System and OCLC Connexion Client.
3. Provides monthly cataloging statistics and serials usage reports.
4. Shifts, weeds, shelves, and organizes/maintains periodicals stacks and microforms, under the supervision of the serials/electronic access librarian.
5. Creates and updates labels for periodicals stacks as needed.
6. Shelf-reads serials collection on an ongoing basis.
7. Receives and processes serial donations.
8. Provides periodicals collection assistance as needed.
9. Refers patron reference questions to the reference and public services librarian in charge.
10. Processes periodicals received from the bindery.
11. Performs circulation duties.
12. Maintains photocopy machines, microform readers, and reader printers.
13. Performs other duties and projects as assigned by the serials/electronic access librarian, coordinator of technical services, or designee.
Other Functions
Individuals in this job may be assigned one or more of the following tasks on a rotating or as-needed basis.
1. Must be able to stand on feet, and bend for several hours, lift library materials and push/pull book carts.
2. Must be able to handle dusty library materials,
3. Assist in the closing of the library at day’s end.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

5. Proficiency with standard office equipment and software, including Microsoft Office Suite to include mid-level knowledge of computer/internet/email6. Knowledge of Horizon Library Management System, Copy Cataloging, OCLC-MARC, LC format, and OCLC Connexion.
1. Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
2. Successful experience: Computer experience, including library software and online applications.
3. Other preferences: Library experience knowledge of library serials procedures.
4. Accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills. Three-five years of experience preferred.
