The Lynchburg Public Library is seeking a responsible and detailed individual to join the Youth Services Department. The position includes working with children and families in a busy and diverse public library. Evening and Saturday hours are required.
When assigned to Youth Services
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Staffs the Youth Services desk and assists library patrons of all ages in finding library materials to meet their informational, educational, and recreational needs
- Assists patrons of all ages, including children and caregivers, in locating library materials to meet their informational, educational, and recreational needs
- Demonstrates use of catalog and electronic databases to customers
- Provides technology instruction to customers and troubleshoots in the use of internet, computers, printers, copiers, tablets, and e-book readers
- Supports librarians and youth staff in program preparation, such as craft prep or program setup/take down
- Designs attractive, thematic book displays
- Shelves youth materials and conducts shelf reading
- Monitors play area and keeps youth department tidy
- Monitors teen space
- Upholds excellent customer service standards with enthusiasm, energy, and professionalism
- Performs other tasks as required
- .Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
- When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school and some experience working with children in an educational setting preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Public library experience preferred, not required.
- Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
- Knowledge of the procedures, practices and equipment of a public library
- Ability to learn standard library tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed policies and procedures
- Ability to operate standard office machines, including computers
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to prioritize tasks
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and employees
- Ability to type accurately
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse customer base
- Ability to count money accurately
- Knowledge of filing, both numerically and alphabetically
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, diagram or schedule form.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Solid interpersonal skills, including tact, common courtesy, strong communication skills and conflict resolution skills required to work with individual citizens and other employees.
COMPUTER SKILLS Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software, use of Internet, and ability to teach such subjects.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Regularly required to talk, hear, and use fingers and hands to operate. Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel and crouch, and to lift up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus. May be required to move PC hard drives, servers, monitors, etc.
