Purpose

The Log Yard Supervisor/Coordinator is responsible for leading and coordinating log unloading, decking and staging activities for the Emmett Sawmill. The Coordinator/Supervisor oversees the safety, quality, and staging activities for the log yard. He or she also collaborates with the maintenance team for machine upkeep. Extensive log yard and heavy equipment experience is called upon for the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the department. The Log Yard Supervisor/Coordinator also supervises other department employees as assigned. All Woodgrain employees will be expected to exemplify our core values and put Safety Above All.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities, Expectations and Performance Measures .

  • Directs and assist in loading and unloading log trucks.
  • Directs and maintains logs on mill log decks both small and large log line.
  • Assists and directs the staging of loads in designated locations for scaling.
  • Organize log decks by appropriate species and verifies appropriate labeling.
  • Maintains good rapport with truck drivers to improve process.
  • Perform equipment preventative maintenance checks and minor maintenance when needed.
  • Lead log yard safety meetings.
  • Identifies and corrects quality problems in own work and log yard team.
  • Verifies and keeps all log yard equipment is clean.
  • Delegates crew to necessary tasks to include log decking, scaling locations and species locations.
  • Will backup and assist entire team with various other tasks as needed.
  • Confer with production manager and general manager to ensure min/max log yard volume maintained.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Education / Experience / Certification

· High School Diploma/GED (or higher).

· Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a lumber manufacturing environment.

· Experience in a sawmill operation and knowledge of lumber specifications.

· Requires two years full time experience driving swing machines, Front End Loaders, 996 and/or similar heavy equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Strong communication skills.

· Knowledgeable in the preventive maintenance process.

· Demonstrated leadership in sawmill safety.

· Strong problem solving skills.

· Strong understanding of all machines and cutting tools in the sawmill and the production flow.

· Intermediate computer skills for reporting production and maintenance information timely.

· Knowledgeable in the preventive maintenance process of heavy equipment.

Reporting Line and Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct supervisory responsibilities over Log Yard employees and additional staff as assigned.

Reports to the Production Manager.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands and work environment are representative of a typical sawmill environment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Noise level is moderate to high depending on the area of the mill. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. Requires close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $30.00 - $34.00 per hour
