Hanover County Parks and Recreation, a nationally recognized, award-winning agency, is looking for an energetic and knowledgeable team member to lead its park and athletic maintenance division. Candidates should have an interest in athletic field and turf grass maintenance, in addition to park operations and general grounds maintenance. Hanover County Parks and Recreation is responsible for managing more than 50 athletic fields and over 1,500 acres of parklands and broad range of recreational opportunities for citizens and visitors.GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is a supervisory position that leads the work of skilled technical staff. The incumbent performs complex tasks and fieldwork in either grounds maintenance or parks and athletic facilities. ORGANIZATION: The Maintenance Manager reports to the Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation and supervises various maintenance staff positions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Supervises, leads, directs, trains, inspects, and evaluates employee performance; creates work plans and assigns work schedules; performs related human resources functions including disciplinary processes and annual evaluations; completes necessary paperwork and staff reports.Coordinates maintenance work performed by contractors and other private vendors; coordinates maintenance schedules with facility users.Purchases supplies, equipment, and materials as needed for grounds operations; enforces all county procurement policies with subordinate staff; provides input for the development of the grounds maintenance operating budget; completes reports and reconciliations as required.Provides input to assist with the development of the Department’s operating budget. Performs other duties as assigned. Parks & Athletics Develops and implements the annual athletic field maintenance plan; coordinates and performs grounds maintenance procedures, such as cutting grass, seeding, aeration, top dressing, soil testing, and other related grounds maintenance functions as needed.Conducts facility inspections including athletic facilities, concession buildings, restroom facilities, playgrounds, trails, courts, lighting, parking areas, bleachers, storage areas and other park amenities.Assists athletic facility user groups with after-hours emergencies as needed; coordinates weekend staff coverage and special support assignments for large events and tournaments. Assists with coordinating special projects to include landscaping, Scout projects, volunteer clean-up events, and special events and other programs offered by the Department. WORKING CONDITIONS: A. HazardsPossible exposure to high noise level, extreme temperatures, and adverse weather conditions.Possible exposure to fertilizer, chemicals and suppliesB. EnvironmentOffice- 50%Field- 50% (Must be able to travel to Parks & Recreation facilities)C. Physical Effort Must be able to lift up to 50 poundsD. Non-exempt KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: General knowledge of the principals of staff supervision, employee training and performance evaluations required. Knowledge of the modern principles and practices of recreational facilities management and implementation of programs for assigned services; knowledge of county policies, codes and safety regulations; ability to operate modern office equipment, including computers; ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the general public; ability to coordinate, direct and implement recreation facilities services suited to current and future community needs. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent required (Associate’s degree preferred in a related field) with at least two (2) years related experience, including supervisory experience. ,–OR- Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License Work beyond normal work schedule, including weekends and evenings Twelve-month probationary period Created: September 2022
