Starting salary for this position is: $4,117 (Monthly)

Employees starting at the entry step of this range receive salary step advancement after six months and every 12 months thereafter. If an employee starting at anything higher than the entry step of the range, will have salary step advancement after 12 months and salary step advancement every 12 months thereafter until they reach the top of the salary range. Each salary step advancement will be approximately a 5% increase in salary.

The Community Colleges of Spokane is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Maintenance Mechanic 1 in the District Facilities Division.

GENERAL DEFINITION

Under general direction of the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, the Maintenance Mechanic assists journey-level tradespeople with semi-skilled work in construction, maintenance, modifications or repairs to buildings, facilities, HVAC systems, utility tunnels, sewer systems, and equipment. This position may work independently on routine maintenance assignments or under the technical direction of a journey worker as needed.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform semi-skilled work in construction, maintenance, modifications or repairs to buildings, facilities, utility tunnels, sewer systems and equipment. *
  • Troubleshoot and make minor repairs for various areas such as: *
    • Inspect door locks and make minor adjustments to door hardware.
    • Make minor repairs to students’ desks, chairs, tables, or office furniture.
    • Maintain and repair roads, ramps, sidewalks, parking lots, parking blocks, street signs, utility systems, and gutters.
    • Perform semi-skilled maintenance and construction work on gas, water and sewer systems.
    • Check for proper operation of campus security and site lighting systems and identify deficiencies.
    • Perform minor support for plumbing problems such as plunging or unclogging drains, washer replacements, and stem replacements.
    • Assist in repairing irrigation systems valves, vacuum breakers and time clocks.
    • Assist in pressurizing and adjusting sprinkler systems and checking for winter damage.
  • Assist electricians to troubleshoot building interior problems like power outages, resetting circuit breakers and switches and determining if lightbulbs are burned out or if a ballast is defective. *
  • Assist carpenters with roof leaks and temporarily repair as applicable. *
  • Operate hand tools, power tools or other shop equipment. Clean, service, adjust and store tools and equipment. *
  • Change and monitor the condition of HVAC filters, belts, and pulleys. *
  • Operate motorized equipment and vehicles such as light trucks, small tractors, front-end loaders, dump trucks, forklifts, trenchers, trailers, and snow removal equipment. *
  • May support special academic functions or events; set up and reset rooms/areas; load and unload trucks, move and assemble furniture and equipment, or perform custodial functions such as mopping, sanitizing, and emptying trash cans. *
  • Assist grounds team as needed to mow lawns and maintain grounds (ditching, weeding, seeding, irrigating, aerating, pruning, spraying herbicides, and fertilizing). *
  • Maintain campus grounds by removing litter, debris, snow and ice around building entrances, sidewalks, parking lots, streets, and dumpsters; clean sidewalks, streets and parking lots. *
  • Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
  • Complies with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statutes and collective bargaining agreements. *
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *

  • Indicates this is an essential duty.
This position is designated a bargaining unit position.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)


  • Experience operating hand tools, power tools or other shop equipment.
  • Ability to assess building repair issues and explain issues/concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and as a member of a team.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
  • A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals, objectives and strategic plan of CCS.
  • The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, community and technical college system.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion.

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS)

  • High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent mix of education and experience that demonstrates the candidate meets all competency requirements for this position.
  • Two (2) or more years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or related field.
  • Knowledge of chemicals and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ability to read and interpret SDS instructions.
  • Experience reading building plans.
  • Experience working in higher education or general government.

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

TOTAL COMPENSATION WITH BENEFITS: $67,084 - $75,491.

Total compensation is an estimate based upon adding the following amounts together:

  • Base compensation of $49,404 - $57,324, plus
  • Current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates, plus

The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is equally performed in indoor temperature-controlled office environment and outdoor uncontrolled elements.
  • Move up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Work is active in nature.
  • Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions and finger manipulation.
  • Operates and controls movement of power tools and/or large mechanized, powered and non-powered equipment.
  • Frequent kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing and twisting.
  • Enters, crouches, twists, works and climbs in and out of confined spaces.
  • Requires communication ability necessary to understand instructions and recognize hazardous, unsafe or poisonous materials and/or products.
  • Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, odors and/or biohazards.
  • Respiratory equipment used that may require adherence to applicable safety rules and standards.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Full-time schedule (12-month, 40-hours a week).
  • 6-month probationary period; may be extended up to 12 months.
  • This position is overtime eligible.
  • Requires local or regional travel. If using a personal vehicle, proof of driver's license.
  • Criminal background check is required.
