POSITION: Facility Maintenance Specialist

SALARY: $18.32 - $21.24/hour DOE

REPORTS TO: Facility Maintenance Supervisor

LOCATION: Nespelem, WA


Basic Functions: Provides service to Tribal building and low-income elders and handicapped clients by performing a variety of journeyman skill trades work in building, mechanical, basic electrical, plumbing, construction, repair and maintenance of reservation buildings, homes, and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications


Education and Training:

Requires a high school diploma or GED and three years’ experience performing functions in one of the following areas: carpentry, electrical/mechanical repair, plumbing, or similar trade field; OR trade school degree in one of the trade areas listed and 12 months’ experience.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires knowledge and understanding of material estimating and of Uniform Building Code requirements.

Requires knowledge and understanding of basic maintenance, repair and troubleshooting techniques for single phase circuits.

Requires knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with building maintenance and repair.

Requires skills in the use of equipment and vehicles associated with building maintenance and repair.

Requires ability to construct, repair, renovated floors, roofs, partitions, doors, windows, furniture, construct kitchen and bathroom cabinets, install vinyl and carpet floor coverings.

Requires ability to read and interpret blue prints, determines proper work methods and procedures, and applies trade knowledge.

Requires ability to research, plan, estimate and inspect projects before, during and after for uniformity with project goas, plans, specifications, and manufacturer specifications.

Requires ability to follow oral and written instructions, to work independently, to communicate effectively, and to write clearly and concisely.

Requires ability to work under deadlines and with disgruntled homeowners.

Requires skills and ability to be a team player and work with the general public, other tribal programs, co-workers and vendors.

Requires ability to operate heavy equipment on public roads.

Requires ability to be willing to improve journeyman skill knowledge by attending training classes and independent study to keep up current trade knowledge.

Requires ability to work weekends and holidays, and a flexible schedule when required.

Requires ability to drive in adverse weather conditions.

Requires ability to work in adverse weather conditions. Must be able to work outdoors engaged in work of primarily an active nature.

Requires the ability to maintain cardiovascular fitness to engage in active physical labor.

Requires ambulatory ability to sit, walk to campus locations, and operate vehicles and equipment.

Requires the ability to lift, carry and move medium to heavy weight materials up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis; up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.

Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for long periods at a time.

Requires the ability to squat, bend, kneel, crawl, push and pull.

Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens, to drive a vehicle, and to observe work processes.

Requires the ability to use hearing for ordinary and telephonic conversation, to provide staff training sessions, and to hear sound prompts from equipment.

Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination, arm hand dexterity and visual acuity including depth perception to drive delivery vehicle and read numbers and words.

Requires the ability to work beyond the 40 hour work week, including extended work days, holidays and weekends.

Requires the ability to drive in adverse weather conditions.


Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.


TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.


If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
