The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities –Ops Division, Buildings & Grounds Section is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Maintenance Specialist - Building and Grounds Division. The selected incumbent will be responsible for facility and plumbing repair, building maintenance and assisting in the maintenance of all of the HVAC systems at the DPU Operations Center, Warehouse and 1801 Commerce Rd; and will provide a degree of supervision to Industrial Painter and assist in project planning and inspection.

  • Assisting in maintaining all of the HVAC systems at the DPU Operations Center, Warehouse and 1801 Commerce Rd.;
  • Assisting in dispensing of hazardous chemicals and inspecting confined spaces;
  • Assisting in managing HVAC and chemical maintenance projects;
  • Assisting in project planning and inspection;
  • Assisting in reading work orders, maps and charts;
  • Acting as Lead/Supervisor in the absence of the supervisor.
This is an essential position, which requires the selected candidate to report to work for emergency and on-call duty in response to inclement weather/natural disaster.

This position requires working overtime, including weekends, nights and holidays as necessary.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of people management, supervising/leading crews; material safety data sheets; and forecasting and planning. Knowledge of HVAC principles and natural gas systems.

Demonstrated skill with effective oral and written communication, computer proficiency including GIS systems; and plumbing. Must be possess people management and customer service skills.

Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, self-manage, problem-solve, and communicate with diverse populations with differing needs.


MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Associate's Degree preferred;
  • Five years of progressive experience in the assigned technical field;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department ) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.


LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record;
  • A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire;
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record;

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • At least two (2) years of experience servicing and repairing of Hazardous Chemical metering equipment;
  • At least one (1) year of experience in a maintenance and mechanical related role;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Experience working in a supervisory or lead capacity is a plus.
