MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I, II, or III - STREETS Job at City of Sachse

Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in performing a variety of tasks in the general construction, repairs, and maintenance of city streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, medians, alleys, curbs, and storm drains.
The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.
Essential Job Functions:
Completes street maintenance by
o Setting up and removing barricades and traffic cones to secure work areas,
o operating various heavy equipment,
o observing problematic cracks in streets,
o determining best way to complete repair,
o preparing crack seal machine, inserting tar into machine, heating hoses,
o blowing cracks with air to remove debris, rocks and dirt,
o utilizing crack seal machine to fill cracks with tar, and
o documenting all work completed
Repairs potholes and other damage to City's streets by
o operating motor vehicle, observing City's roadways,
o identifying problematic roadway hazards,
o retrieving appropriate equipment and tools from truck,
o using a saw to cut around pothole in street,
o operating steel roller to roll base,
o tacking outer edges,
o filling pothole with concrete or asphalt mix to patch street damage,
o utilizing loader machinery to back drag,
o raking area to obtain smooth edges,
o maneuvering steel roller over area to compact mix, and
o documenting work completed.
Maintains City's concrete areas by
o identifying problematic streets, alleys and sidewalk areas,
o breaking concrete area,
o setting forms for new concrete, filling with concrete mix, ensuring shape of concrete,
o operating various equipment and
o documenting all work completed.
Maintains City's streets by
o patrolling streets and related area for litter and debris,
o collecting debris from streets, greenbelts, right of ways, underpasses and overpasses within City's limits,
o storing debris in vehicle, and operating equipment to clear streets from debris, transporting debris to collection facilities, maintaining log of materials collected, and
o documenting actions and procedures as required
Assists other departments as needed by
o providing maintenance support to Parks and Recreation, Drainage and Water and Sewer,
o completing irrigation repair as necessary and signs, buttons and markings activities,
o working on special projects as assigned, and documenting all work completed.
o Sets up and removes barricades and traffic cones to secure work areas.
Assists other public works divisions with maintenance and repair work as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions for assigned area.

Maintenance Tech I
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma/GED supplemented by one (1) year general labor experience.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Driver License at time of hire.
NOTE: Employees hired to work in the Public Works Department will be required to obtain a Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL), Class B or higher within twelve (12) months of hire in order to continue employment.
NOTE: All certifications and licenses must be current at time of application and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
Maintenance Tech II
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma/GED supplemented by two or more years of specialized experience in area assigned (Streets, Water/Wastewater, or Parks Maintenance).
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.
NOTE: Those assigned to Water or Wastewater Divisions must possess and maintain a Class D Water Operator License OR Class I Wastewater Collection License or have the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire in order to continue employment.
NOTE: All certifications and licenses must be current at time of application and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
Maintenance Tech III
High school diploma/GED supplemented by five or more years of specialized experience in area assigned (Streets, Water/Wastewater, or Parks Maintenance).
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess a valid State of Texas Commercial Driver (CDL), Class B at time of hire or career progression.
Those assigned to Water or Wastewater Divisions must possess and maintain two or more of the following License at the time of hire or career progression:
Class D Water Operator License or higher
Class I Wastewater Collection License or higher
Backflow Protection Assembly Tester (BPAT)
Those assigned to Streets must possess and maintain either a Class D Water Operator License or higher OR Class I or higher Wastewater Collection License OR have successfully qualified on performance testing for operation of heavy equipment at the time of hire or career progression.
NOTE: All certifications and licenses must be current at time of application and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
- Work is performed in an outdoor environment.
- May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling and lifting. Must be able to lift 50 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs occasionally.
- May be subject to dangerous machinery, exposure to extreme weather conditions, potential for physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.
Equipment and Tools Utilized:
- Equipment utilized includes City vehicle, backhoe, dump trucks, tractors, mowers, shovels, picks, rakes, brooms, hammers, saws, drills, concrete tools and other construction and maintenance related tools and equipment.

Health Insurance - The City provides health insurance two plan options for employee and dependents. Employee premiums for the HDHP- HSA plan are 100% paid by the City. The PPO plan premiums for employee coverage are $20 per month. The City contributes 35% toward dependent health coverage.
Dental Insurance - The City also provides employee and dependent dental insurance coverage. Employee premiums are 100% paid by the City. The City contributes $50 per month toward the cost of dependent dental coverage.
Long-term Disability - Paid by the City; providing up to 60% of salary for qualifying employees after 90-day elimination period.
Life Insurance - The City provides life insurance at no cost to employees at one times the annual salary up to $50,000. Additional life insurance may be purchased for the employee and his/her dependents at a reasonable cost that varies based upon employee age.
Supplemental Insurance - Supplemental insurance is available for purchase for Short-term Disability; Accident Insurance; Cancer Insurance; Heart/Stroke Insurance; and Universal Life Insurance.
Retirement - Employee contributes 7% with funds matched 2:1 at retirement. Retire at age 60 with 5 years of creditable service; or any age with 20 years of creditable service.
Deferred Compensation - Employee contributes up to 25% of his/her salary for long-term tax-deferred savings.
Social Security/Medicare - Social Security is withheld from employee paychecks in the amount of 6.2%; Medicare is withheld at the rate of 1.45%.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) - Paid by the City.
Longevity Pay - $4/month for each month of service after one full year of completed service.
Incentive Pay - Varies based on approved certifications.
Bilingual Pay $25 per month for the proven ability to read, write and speak another language.
Tuition Reimbursement - Up to $2,000 annually.
Vacation Leave
1-4.99 years of service = 10 days per year (Ten-12 hour shifts for Fire Shift Personnel),
5-14.99 years of service = 15 days per year (Fifteen-12 hour shifts for Fire Shift Personnel),
15 years and up = 20 days per year (Twenty-12 hour shifts for Fire Shift Personnel).
Sick Leave - Full-time employees accrue 3.34 hours biweekly up to a maximum of 500 hours. Fire shift employees accrue 5.01 hours biweekly up to a maximum of 540.
Personal Leave - Four days per fiscal year (Four-12 hour shifts for Fire Shift Personnel).
Bereavement Leave - Up to three days for the death of an immediate family member (Three-12 hour shifts for Fire Shift Personnel).
Paid Holidays - 10 holidays per year (Ten-12 hour shifts for Fire Shift Personnel).
