Position Title: Maintenance Worker II – Sports Field Technician

Department: Parks and Recreation

Immediate Supervisor: Parks Superintendent

POSITION SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the position is to perform maintenance activities and projects at the city’s Sports Complex to ensure the readiness and safety of the facility. This position requires the performance of manual and semi-skilled work in the areas of turf maintenance, sport field preparation, landscaping projects and general repairs. Staff will also assist in the repair of other city parks and city facilities, including a 40,000 square foot multi-purpose building with indoor ice arena. Work involves manual labor and the operation of a variety of motorized and power equipment.

Work Schedule:

Full Time-Primarily weekdays, evenings and weekends dependent upon meetings, programs and special events.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Deliver a safe and excellent customer service experience to our resident and park patrons

Coordinate, plan and manage the daily operations and maintenance of a sports complex consisting of (4) athletic fields, a playground and adjacent green space.

Operate all equipment necessary to carry out the maintenance of playing surfaces and adjacent turf areas at the Sports Complex.

Use hand tools, trucks, trailers, utility tractors with attachments, mowers, string trimmers and auxiliary maintenance equipment to perform necessary tasks in a safe and responsible manner.

Conduct turf maintenance activities including mowing, aerification, fertilization, seeding, sodding, field layout/lining and weed control.

6. Coordinate cleanliness, maintenance and projects associated with general park spaces, pavilions and the playground.

7. Work with the Parks Superintendent on budget development, purchasing and procedures regarding turf and field maintenance.

Assist with projects and ground maintenance throughout the park system including leaf clean-up, tree maintenance, brush chipping, mulching and special event preparation.

Coordinate and supervise the work of seasonal and/or full-time staff. Provide training as needed.

Evaluate and communicate field conditions to Park Superintendent and Brentwood Parks and Recreation staff.

Assist with snow removal and citywide storm clean-up when needed.

Perform other duties as assigned

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and practices used in the maintenance of athletic fields and parks.

Knowledge of or ability to learn park maintenance techniques and methods involved in turf grass maintenance and repair.

Experience using hand tools, power tools and a variety of motorized equipment.

Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, construction and landscaping methods.

Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under adverse conditions.

Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate with the public in a positive manner.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from a general or technical high school, or GED

Minimum three years related work experience in athletic field maintenance; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Experience and understanding of turf management.

Certification in American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider and First Aid required within six months of employment.
