The Managing Director (MD) of Operations, Strategy, and Budget, Professional Education is responsible for three sets of key results: 1) developing partnerships and attaining enrollment targets for Regional Leadership Programs; 2) ensuring strong, reliable in-person and virtual event and operations systems for all Professional Education programs; and 3) providing strategic advice to improve partnerships, operations, and budget strategy for all Professional Education programs.
The MD will manage a full-time (currently seven) and part-time (currently 12) team and invest significant time building relationships and working collaboratively with Relay leaders and team members. The MD will work closely with the Provost, Vice Provosts, National and Regional Deans, and Directors of National and Regional Events & Operations on the Professional Education team as well as operational colleagues, the Chief Strategy Officer, and the Chief Finance & Operations Officer's team to ensure that Relay is providing the highest quality education to teachers and leaders across the country while continuously improving the organization's overall approach to budget, operations, and partnerships.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the Professional Education Events and Operations team to success by:

  • Ensuring systematic, proactive, and efficient partner management, and event operations including on-site operations and site visits for all Professional Education programs (including ensuring the budget is balanced across all programs).
  • Creating, implementing, and refining a Program Operations staffing and development plan that leads to efficient and effective event logistics of Professional Education sessions and registration.
  • Supporting Regional Operations for Leadership Programs and Teacher Professional Education.
  • Liaising with internal stakeholders to manage the Regional Leadership Partnerships team, creating and executing a comprehensive partnership vision through which Relay builds long-term sustainable partnerships serving the leadership development needs of all educators including teachers, aspiring school leaders, sitting school leaders, and school systems leaders.

  • Enrollment and revenue targets are consistently met across programs.
  • We maintain a balanced portfolio of partners in terms of district and charter models, urban and rural geographies, and regions of the United States.
  • Partners see Relay as a go-to partner and resource in teacher and leadership development for and renew partnerships year over year.

Provide strategic advice to continuously improve partnerships and operations strategy for all programs at Relay within and beyond the bounds of Professional Education. This will require investing time in the following:

  • Develop knowledge of financial models outside of Professional Education programs. Understand constraints, key factors toward sustainability, and opportunities for programs.
  • Work with the Provost, Vice Provosts, and other Professional Education instructional leaders to gather data and set a strategic growth plan that encompasses the various needs of our partners.
  • Work with the Senior Director of Special Projects to develop and execute projects that require collaboration across operations, instructional, and partnerships teams.
  • Lead intricate national and cross-functional projects that improve upon or innovate beyond Relay's existing operations and ensure that the voices of the Professional Education team are represented in decision-making, policy-making, and systems building.

Collaborate with the finance team to iterate on budget tools, systems, and strategy to ensure programs remain financially sustainable.

  • Build and maintain annual budgets for Professional Education cost centers.
  • Collaborate with faculty and operations colleagues to revise and continually adjust financial models to ensure our programs remain financially sustainable and are reflective of team and partner needs.
  • Review and approve expense requests and invoice requests (for partners) to ensure that all expenses are in line with approved budget allocations.
  • Work jointly with the finance and partnerships teams to ensure we are collecting on committed revenue from external partners and devising collection strategies and processes when necessary.
  • Provide monthly expense and revenue reports to the Provost of Professional Education, Chief Strategy Officer, and Chief Operating & Financial Officer.

Build and manage a diverse and exceptional team.

  • Center a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all management decisions.
  • Build a diverse and exceptional team of full-time and part-time staff. This includes recruiting and hiring (with support from our central Talent Team) diverse and exceptional talent, retaining high-performing team members, giving clear and actionable feedback to help people improve, and addressing performance issues forthrightly.

Manage execution of the work. This includes:

  • Delegating work effectively and building alignment with staff members on the vision for success at the level of projects, tasks, and responsibilities.
  • Monitoring progress against goals on an ongoing basis and ensuring course corrections are made as needed.
  • Debriefing work once it's done to draw lessons and hold staff members accountable for results.

QUALIFICATIONS
First and foremost, the Managing Director must share the Relay community's commitment to working together to improve student growth and achievement through phenomenal teacher preparation grounded in diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. This includes providing teacher preparation programs that set novice teachers up to succeed in the classroom from day one; leadership programs that train new and veteran school and district leaders to best serve their school communities; and teacher-facing professional education that provides ongoing learning to educators. Additionally, for this position we're looking for candidates that possess a combination of the following skills:

  • At least 10 years of work experience, preferably in urban education and/or event operations
  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred and/or extensive experience in an education-facing role/organization
  • Strong project management skills paired with the ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources
  • A track record of experience managing and developing highly effective teams
  • Skills and experience in management of complex budgets and financial scenario planning highly preferred
  • Acute attention to detail, a focus on efficiency, and demonstrated experience with systems building and process development
  • Experience with grants management and/or school district and state education agency procurement process are a plus
  • An eagerness to help improve Relay's program and operations and institutional practices in whatever ways possible
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • A strong sense of humor coupled with an ability to work efficiently, intensely, and within an entrepreneurial environment
  • A demonstrated passion for urban education and meeting the needs of students furthest from opportunity
  • Ability to travel at least 20% (required) and up to 30% of the time (preferred)

COMPENSATION
Relay's compensation philosophy is to pay competitively for the education nonprofit market and ensure equity across the institution. Starting compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors including the new hire's qualifications and their region's cost of labor.
The starting salary range for this role is $160,000 to $175,000. The hired candidate can expect to be placed within this range based on their prior experience, as well as the cost of labor for the region they live in. New hires typically are not eligible for a salary at the high end of this range if they live in a region with a low or medium cost of labor. Lastly, Relay is striving towards internal pay equity throughout our organization. Because of this, we do not negotiate salary offers.
