Perform manual and equipment operation work handling and sorting materials at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF).

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform manual labor in the handling of materials at the Material Recovery Facility, including loading and sorting.

  • Open and sort blue bags of commingled containers; sort loose commingled fiber or container products by category.

  • Ensure the quality of products by removing all non-recyclable material and trash from the line.

  • Maintain quantitative performance in a continuous feed conveyor capacity.

  • Operate and maintain environmental control systems, including pumps.

Ancillary Job Functions
  • Perform janitorial tasks in the general housekeeping of the MRF, including sweeping and cleaning floors, maintaining facility grounds, and disposing of trash.

  • Perform various laboring and semi-skilled tasks such as operating equipment.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
  • Considerable knowledge of recycling operations.

  • Considerable knowledge of safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of motorized equipment and hand/power tools.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with and communicate effectively with other employees.

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work facility.

  • Ability to perform work in a deliberate manner, differentiating between desired and undesirable materials, remaining aware of surroundings, and working safety.

  • Ability to read and understand MRF Operation and Procedural Manual.

  • Must maintain the ability to have concentrated attention to detail.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
  • May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, extreme temperatures, oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, sharp objects, or potentially hazardous bodily fluids.

  • Exposed to moderate to loud noise levels.

  • Must have the ability to identify and distinguish colors, and precise hand-eye coordination.

  • May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.

  • Must be able to climb stairs.

  • Must have full range of vision.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
