Materials Engineer III Job at Essentium Inc
We are looking for a dependable and motivated Materials Development Engineer (ME) excited to work in a fast-paced tech startup. Essentium’s primary focus is on our cutting-edge extrusion-based additive manufacturing technology. The core function of the ME will be to work as part of the Materials R&D team to provide technical expertise and leadership on development projects, with a focus on materials engineering for Essentium’s High Speed Extrusion printing platform. In addition to materials development efforts, assignments may also include assisting or leading technical and operational efforts aligned with broader Materials R&D program objectives. The ME will work as a key technical member on cross functional teams for Joint Development Agreements, external contracts and internal product development, and work with a dynamic team to accomplish goals. The team member is also expected to maintain a safe and productive work environment by monitoring and enforcing safety procedures, PPE, 5S, and general housekeeping. The position is at our Headquarters in Pflugerville, TX. Travel will be approximately 15% with up to 50% during short sprints.

RESPONSIBILITIES: *
- Plan, design, and provide technical expertise for material development projects
- Apply knowledge of materials science to economically attain development objectives
- Develop new material formulations in conjunction with resin suppliers and develop early printing process of new materials
- Develop fundamental operating window for materials using characterization tools like DSC, DMA, MFR, TGA, rheometer, etc.
- Operating HSE with new formulations for material certification steps
- Develop technical content and demonstrations for marketing purposes
- Design and develop parts to be optimized for 3D printing
- Provide technical support on assigned projects to customers: issues, updates, and installs
- Interact directly with customers through demonstrations, presentations, or clarifying reports
- Maintain strong relationships with customers and internal teams to best serve the customer
- Keep thorough and detailed documentation on all projects
- Prep, program, and operate printers, measurement, and test equipment to output the tool, device, and/or component to meet project requirements
- Utilize and effectively program CAD tools (or other skills) as needed for project success
- Provide information of parts developed by compiling, initiating, sorting, and analyzing production performance records and data
- Develop and maintain cross-discipline specialties and in depth of knowledge of Essentium’s materials and additive manufacturing technologies
- Perform tasks in support of R&D projects; support project managers in project planning
- Maintain safe and clean work environment by staying up to date on the use of all control points, equipment, and resources; maintaining compliance with established policies and procedures
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge of relevant emerging technologies
Job Requirements & Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials, Polymer or related Engineering discipline with four (4) to seven (7) years of experience
- Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline is a plus with one (1) to four (4) years of experience
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Polymer Science, or relevant fields.
- Understanding of polymer chemistry and 3D printer operation and maintenance is a must
- Deep knowledge in polymer processing, especially thermoplastics
- Experience with report writing and contributing substantially to technical projects
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Able to collaborate on a cross functional team as well as work independently
- Proficient in MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Ability to work well with changing priorities and/or situations
- Ability and willingness to travel when needed
- Ability and willingness to take technical lead roles within larger projects as needed
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
