Starting salary: $34,489.00 annually (49-A)


***This is a grant funded position from August 2022 through June 30, 2023. Continuation of this contract is dependent upon additional funding post June 30, 2023.


Purpose Statement

The job of the McKinney-Vento Specialist is to assist with identification of students qualifying for McKinney-Vento services and to support students and families with accessing basic needs, as well as supporting emotional and educational growth. This position will also assist schools in aligning McKinney Vento parent and student needs to district and community programs and services. This position serves students in multiple schools and communities. This position acts as a liaison between parents/guardians, community agencies, state agencies, and school personnel to support parent and community involvement, communication, decision-making, learning at home, volunteering and parenting skills.


This job reports to the Director of Student Services.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Pass a criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance
  • Valid Utah driver's license and evidence of insurability with acceptable driving record that will be verified annually
  • Experience in exercising reasonable judgement with minimal supervisory input
  • Demonstrates a basic competency in reading, writing, and math
  • Ability to use hardware and software to efficiently and effectively complete tasks


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend at an intermediate/advanced level) English and another language may be required depending on the need of the school
  • Experience in K-12 education or a public employment environment and/or with families/students in crisis. (Combination of education (post high school) and experience may be used)
  • Experience with self-motivation and ability to maintain a schedule based on needs of the student, family, and/or school
  • Experience navigating and resolving complex issues that prohibit school participation and academic success


Essential Functions:

  • Assist identified students receiving McKinney Vento services who are facing multiple risk factors including basic needs, academic support, transportation, social emotional support
  • Provides opportunities for families to build their capacity to be advocates and decision makers for improved learning for their children at their schools
  • Provide information to school staff and administration about McKinney-Vento school obligations and support services
  • Provide information to faculty and staff to develop understanding and empathy for the challenges students and families experiencing homelessness face
  • Support school staff to recognize families' existing knowledge, skills and forms of engagement
  • Communicate effectively with district personnel, school administrators, and teachers to build interpersonal relationships that foster a collaborative and cooperative work environment
  • Collaborate with the McKinney-Vento Liaison and school personnel to enhance family connectedness for student learning and development
  • Coordinate with community partners and district departments to provide resources and programming to increase the capacity of families receiving McKinney Vento services to engage in the academic success of their students
  • Create, secure, organize, and maintain a variety of documents and records of activity (paper and electronic) to document relevant information including requests for funding, student and family interactions and outcomes, data needed for reports, grants, compliance and for general reference
  • Creates an environment of safety for student, family, school, and community by adhering to safety rules, laws, and practices
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance
  • Refer students and their families to services provided in the school or through outside agencies to ensure that student and family needs are met
  • Works with Family/School Collaboration Specialists to align services when appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned


Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling (30 lbs), some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and some fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 30% sitting, 37% walking, and 33% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
