POSITION SUMMARY:

This position works under the Director of Equipment and Maintenance and requires the ability to perform vehicle and equipment maintenance, service and repairs, and taking reasonable actions within safety and policy guidelines to carry out these responsibilities for the Company. This position also requires that you maintain accurate records and on-time reports relative to the service department’s operation, schedule mechanical services as needed, and help handle the communications between employees, vendors, suppliers, and the company. This position will be responsible for managing the shop where they are assigned to work, including having oversight of any employees who may work there, as well as the yard and equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES & TASKS

  • Performs mechanic duties to ensure that all company equipment and vehicles are repaired and preventative maintenance service is performed as needed or as per manufacturers’ schedule and OSHA / DOT requirements including required annual inspections. All service performed and parts purchased and/or outside vendor charges will be documented and filed in accordance with company procedures.
  • Ensures that all company policies, procedures and safety standards for personal safety and facility are adhered to. This includes wearing PPE, (Work Boots/Shoes (no tennis shoes), Safety Glasses, etc.)
  • Provides repair and maintenance information as needed. Will meet regularly with the Director and/or management to assure that the fleet and equipment are running as expected.
  • Makes any necessary repairs at the shop and/or in the field, as may be necessary.
  • Communicates status of any broken-down equipment and major repairs made to the proper manager.
  • Ensures paperwork is submitted daily to the operations and/or scheduling area and provide a documented list to what was not repaired and/or ready for the next day's schedule. Record unusable units. Notify Director either verbally or in writing about any negligently damaged equipment on a daily basis, preferably as soon as becoming aware.
  • Responsible for ensuring toolboxes, storage stalls, gates, buildings, etc., are locked and secured at the end of each day.
  • Ensures loaders, chippers, and other engine powered equipment are greased as needed and fluids are checked and filled.
  • Ensures wheel chocks are available in trucks and for equipment, as needed.
  • Keeps work area organized, clean, and in compliance with OSHA/NFPA/EPA requirements.
  • Performs checks of tire pressures and lug nuts for trucks, trailers, and equipment.
  • Documents on invoices, all paid or charged purchases and what piece of equipment they were used for, additionally, equipment records will be updated to reflect parts replaced and services performed. Must ensure all warranty work or parts are not billed to Company.
  • Maintain a daily log of work orders, messages, or information received or relayed.
  • Prepares repair orders for services to be completed.
  • Order parts as needed and requested.
  • Maintain an inventory of parts and equipment on hand.
  • Schedules service appointments.
  • Refers to service history, inspects equipment or vehicle, and recommends additional service, as needed.
  • Provides excellent customer service while relaying information to the proper company employees, vendors, suppliers, and customers in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs all duties in an independent manner with minimal direction and supervision by consistently showing ability to recognize and deal with priorities; recognize and perform duties (such as routine building or mechanical preventative maintenance) which need to be performed although not directly assigned. As needed, seeks guidance and direction in the performance of responsibilities and duties.
  • Demonstrates good judgment and gives recommendations to reduce maintenance costs. When ordering parts or repairs, obtain 2 prices (when possible) and availability if a part or repair exceeds $400.00. All invoices must provide Unit # and P.O.#. Make recommendations for outsourcing work or equipment replacement where feasible.
  • Raises safety issues regarding equipment/vehicles/yard and/or facility.
  • Attends seminars or classes as needed or requested to update maintenance procedures and knowledge.
  • Demonstrates good judgment and reasoning in investigating and solving problems, respecting the confidentiality of company and personnel information.
  • Seeks guidance and direction where needed in the performance of responsibilities and duties and maintains cooperative working relationships with management, employees, vendors, suppliers, and customers.
  • Assists and trains others as needed on maintenance or repairs of equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintains a well-groomed professional appearance appropriate for the position and within policy guidelines.
  • Performs all other duties as directed or as needed by business operations and conditions.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in the company garage, at outdoor job sites, in the company yard and around buildings. The work may involve travel to customer sites with related exposure to routine hazards such as moving machinery, vehicles, and severe weather conditions. Subject to odors, fumes and substances typically associated with mechanical work on vehicles and other diesel/gasoline equipment. Occasional to frequent exposure to burns, scrapes, abrasions, chemicals common to mechanical work and temperature changes. Some work is required for documentation, ordering parts, inventory, etc. Subject to frequent interruptions and varied workloads and must possess ability to cope and deal effectively with multiple responsibilities at once and work in a busy environment. Must be able to remain calm in emergencies to prevent injuries, maintain safety and assist as needed. Position is considered lightly stressful on an occasional basis.



EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or GED required. Prefer some vocational school/certificate training for mechanic or diesel mechanic.


LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS

CDL License is preferred, Certified Diesel Mechanic, ASME Preferred


EXPERIENCE

A minimum of 3 years in gas and diesel truck/equipment (heavy, light) mechanics, and small 2 cycle engine equipment repair field is required.


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

The person in this position must be able to develop and oversee the preventative maintenance program and emergency repair activity for the Company's equipment, vehicles and building. This individual must be able to operate and repair heavy/light diesel equipment, gasoline trucks and equipment, and small 2 cycle engines. Knowledge of mechanical, light electrical and hydraulics is essential. Must be able to ensure equipment and procedures are safety/DOT compliant and adhere to safety regulations. DOT and OSHA knowledge is required. ASME Certification is a plus.
