Mechanical designer will typically work in an office setting, reviewing specifications and other data to develop mechanical layouts. Designers will have working knowledge of mechanical parts as well as computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as AutoCAD and Solidworks.

Mechanical designer will develop designs for mechanical devices and equipment. Once they understand the intended function of a new product they may meet with engineers to discuss material options or other needs related to the product. They then use computer software to finalize the product design.

Mechanical Designer Duties

Mechanical designers typically begin a project by meeting with project managers, engineers, and clients to understand the needs and requirements for a new product or mechanical system. Once materials and specifications have been determined, designers begin using CAD software to plan and develop models. If the model is approved, designer will then finalize designs and send prints to the production department. Other duties will include reproducing and archiving designs; entering Bills of Material into ERP System; Provide technical support during assembly and installation of equipment; Modify designs to correct operating and production issues.

Requirements for a Mechanical Designer

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering or 5+ years of related experience in the field
  • 3+ years’ experience in mechanical design
  • In-depth knowledge of both SolidWorks 3D CAD software and AutoCAD or DraftSight 2D CAD software
  • Extensive knowledge of metal fabrication processes
  • Understanding of current cutting tool technology
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Ability to plan, schedule, coordinate and problem solve effectively
