The Role: The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the mechanical engineering of product and components including functionality, assembly, tooling, modeling, and manufacturing processes, with emphasis on plastic tooling.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creates detailed drawings for the design of Ericson products and components using PTC Creo 8.0 modeling software.
- Collaborates with electrical designers during product development by creating new molded plastic parts for use in Ericson products. Applies best practices to molded parts regarding parting line location, gate location, draft angle, wall thickness, etc.
- Assists Engineering & Sourcing departments by working with mold tool vendors to procure molds for those parts.
- Designs products/sample to accurately demonstrate how a product will look, the feasibility of production, and meet customer requirements. When product is to be modified or a new product to be developed, builds a detailed drawing of the product solution including all specification information, sizing and other relevant information using CAD computer systems.
- Works to understand and incorporate needs of customers through active discussions with suppliers, sales, and customer service departments.
- Understands and incorporates all necessary electrical requirements into the mechanical design of parts.
- Conducts tests on new or modified products to ensure performance and production feasibility as required. Writes test reports as required.
- Stays current on all regulatory compliance or certification requirements as relating to Ericson products.
- Designs machine tooling to effectively produce Ericson products. Works to monitor performance of tooling and manufacturing processes to ensure quality products are manufactured to specifications.
- Coordinates routine maintenance on tooling or orders replacements tooling when necessary.
- May conduct first article inspection on manufactured products. Ensures that manufacturing processes yield components to specification. Implements solutions to problems as appropriate.
- Evaluates processes, equipment and skills required to produce Ericson products efficiently and at the lowest cost. Assists in manufacturing process set up and implementation.
- Designs custom test fixtures and tools to be used in the production of product.
- Evaluates requests from production on assembly process, equipment or part changes, and recommends best solutions.
- Works with vendors to closely monitor costs for tooling, machines, molds, etc. and incorporates into standard costs.
- Produces requests for quotations, receives and reviews quotes, and selects vendors that will result in lower cost requirements, while providing quality based on defined specifications.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Education and Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, engineering technology or related field required
- Minimum of 5 years total work experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Proven track record with designing molded plastic parts and involvement with procurement of tools for them.
- Must have had experience in the design of new products, implementing appropriate manufacturing processes, and providing technical support to the sale of products
- Must have demonstrated ability to utilize Creo 8.0 and AutoCAD
- UL plastics knowledge is a plus. Exposure to Epicor ERP is a plus.
- Use of Microsoft office (word excel outlook, etc) is expected.
