Job Summary
Performs various functions, both clinical and clerical, that assist in the delivery of patient care services in a fast paced environment. The MA functions in accordance with protocols established by the WHC Director and the Center’s Medical Director. The WHC is a high volume outpatient family practice office setting. The MA will prepare patients for all aspects of their clinic visit. The MA will, perform phlebotomy, administer injections, document patient encounter in the electronic medical record, including medication reconciliation and completing check out process. The MA will also and be responsible for clerical duties and quality monitoring that help the department run efficiently.
Job requirements
Minimum Education
- High school diploma or equivalent is necessary.
Minimum Work Experience
- Certified Medical Assistant or minimum of 3 years experience is required.Outpatient experience preferred.
Minimum Licenses and Certifications
- Must be AHA CPR certified.
Required Skills
- Good interpersonal skills; ability to take direction from superiors is essential.
- Must also be able to work independently.
- Completion of phlebotomy training course or currently possess phlebotomy skills.

Essential Functions
- Coordinates all aspects of patient readiness for physician examination such as, obtains and documents vital signs, weight and reason for visit, as well as, places patients in exam room with the appropriate attire for exam.
- Maintains established par levels of all medical and clerical supplies so that physicians and nursing staff have access to adequate supplies and materials.
- Orders all medical and clerical supplies for the clinical department, as well as, restocks shelves and files for physicians and nurses
- Creates, copies, and distributes clerical materials and educational literature as needed for daily health center activities.
- Assists physicians with special procedures and retrieval of patient information so that medical records are organized with up to date results for physician review and physicians are provided with test results requested to ensure patients receive appropriate applications.
- Provides thorough, timely and accurate documentation of all pertinent PHI according to established standards.
- Obtains optimal EKG, pulse oximetry levels, peak flow levels, as well as, applies the correct sized splints and dressings.
- Appropriately prioritizes patient care, seeks assistance as needed from appropriate resources, recognizes need for emergency intervention.
- Identifies the correct patient to receive Laboratory Service, verifies physician orders, as well as, posts orders to ensure appropriate follow up.
- Prepares and packages instruments for sterilization as well as changes soaking solution according to the Infection Control Policy.
- Performs basic office laboratory procedures such as urinalysis, urine culture, hematocrit, sed rate, mono spot, pregnancy tests, throat cultures and related procedures.
- Performs basic clinical procedures such as venipuncture/phlebotomy. Prepares documents and administers vaccines/non-intravenous injections as directed.
- Performs a variety of clerical functions to support office such as typing, filing, scheduling appointments, making phone calls and related duties as required or directed.
- Coordinates patient flow and prepares patient for examination. Takes and records vital signs and EKG’s. Documents intake assessment. Assists physician and others in clinical procedures as required or directed.
- Maintains records, reports, logs and other statistical information as required or directed.
- Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
- Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations.
- Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
- Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
- Locks all medication cabinets, as well as, performs security checks on windows and electrical equipment at daily closure.
- Actively participates in Reach Out and Read program for pediatric patients ages 6 months to 5 years of age.
- Accurately scores all Behavioral Health Screening tools and reports findings to attending provider.
- Identifies variations from expected findings and/or test values.
- Takes appropriate actions when variations are identified
