Responsibilities
Job Summary
- This job is responsible for performing a variety of administrative support duties associated with identifying programs that provide free medications for cancer patients and for supporting patients in receiving the benefit of such programs in accordance with established internal guidelines and procedures.
- Work includes 1) meeting with patients to assess their needs and available programs; 2) initiating applications for patient and physician completion/signature; 3) gathering/validating insurance information and obtaining pre-authorization for services, and 4) performing related administrative support duties.
- Work requires knowledge of insurance authorization/billing requirements and privacy/confidentiality practices, as well as knowledge of medical terminology and the patient intake process.
- An incumbent follows proper channels of communication in handling daily and routine problems and recognizing issues that need referral to management.
- Work requires strong customer service skills, familiarity with department specific computer systems and diligence in researching the availability of programs to support patients in obtaining cost-effective medications and other forms of financial assistance.
- Work is accomplished by exercising effective customer relations skills in interviewing patients/family members directly, frequently in stressful situations.
- Incumbents collaborate with the inpatient pharmacy department (pharmacists, technicians, and assistants) and nursing staff to relay information to facilitate patient care activities, as well as physician offices and retail pharmacies to collect/validate patient medication information to ensure complete accuracy.
Qualifications
Education/Work Experience Requirements
- Successful completion of an accredited medical terminology course(s) or equivalent on-the-job training, and
- two years of related work experience in patient registration, insurance verification, or related function.
