Job Description
The Advanced Microscopy and Imaging Sciences Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is building capabilities and unique techniques in the fields of electron microscopy [transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam (FIB), electron beam backscattered diffraction (EBSD)], scanning probe microscopy (atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, Kelvin probe force microscopy), and optical microscopy (near-filed scanning optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence) for characterizing clean energy materials. Internal groups that we collaborate with are in photovoltaics, energy storage, hydrogen storage, biofuels, catalysts, and wind energy. We are currently seeking a research scientist to provide advanced microscopy support in the areas of EBSD, SEM, FIB and TEM with knowledge in electrical characterization.
A key aspect of this position will be in building collaborations and projects internally and externally to continue the growth and capability development for clean energy materials characterization. Materials will range from semiconductors, metals, nanoparticles, and electrodes materials that will need characterization across length scales (mm to sub-nm). Initial work will include training on our EBSD system for orientation mapping of materials, and training on our group’s new aberration-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope. Projects will require standard characterization, some of beam sensitive materials, with a future focus on in-situ characterization and multi-modal approaches to measure chemical, structural, morphological, electrical, interfacial, and luminescent properties of energy materials.
The successful candidate will have knowledge of photovoltaics, electrical characterization, and microscopy background in (SEM, FIB, and TEM). The researcher will support current projects within the group and develop their own projects in related characterization of clean energy materials.
