The New Partnerships Initiative (NPI) Expanding Health Partnerships—NPI EXPAND Project—is a global five-year (2019-2024) U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded project that supports locally-driven efforts to increase the availability and utilization of high-quality health and education services. NPI EXPAND invests in new and underutilized local partners (NUPs) and strengthens their capacity to strategize, plan, and implement programs with USAID funds. Enhanced participation of capable local organizations to increase demand for and to deliver high-quality, high impact services will enable governments to meet crucial goals equitably and sustainably. NPI EXPAND will also catalyze opportunities to scale up innovative interventions by strengthening the capacity of NUPs with varying levels of capabilities and exposure to USAID.

Purpose and Description of Consultancy:

NPI EXPAND is seeking an accomplished consultant with experience facilitating teambuilding retreats with staff in the international development and global health sector, especially USAID partners, to lead the facilitation of a Team Retreat on June 17, 2022. The planned Team Retreat will bring together 14-17 NPI EXPAND HQ staff based in the Washington, DC for a full day of teambuilding activities. NPI EXPAND staff are implementing a global project with activities in eight countries across Africa, Asia, and South America, focused on capacity building, COVID response, family planning, and maternal and child health. This retreat is taking place approximately mid-way through the project’s implementation, providing an opportunity for staff to engage in reflection, share successes, build on lessons learned, and look ahead to the next half of the project.

In preparation for the retreat, the consultant will collaborate with the Teambuilding Retreat Planning Committee to review relevant project and team information, identify objectives and desired outcomes of the retreat, and design customized activities that provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, collaborative problem solving, reflection, and relationship building. Additionally, the consultant will develop design and administer a brief online survey to gather the larger team’s input on what they would like the retreat to accomplish, the agenda for the retreat, develop any necessary session guides or presentations, facilitate the teambuilding activities, and provide a brief post-retreat report with insights and recommendations for the team. This consultancy will entail liaising with the NPI EXPAND senior leadership and planning committee.

Only applicants currently eligible to work in the United States will be considered. Location for this consultancy is in Washington, DC. While some preparation will occur through online means, the retreat is expected to be in-person, in line with COVID-19 and other safety and security protocols. The Teambuilding Consultant will report to the NPI EXPAND Field Support Director, based in Washington, D.C.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing relevant documents to understand the project’s unique structure and needs, including recent management review
  • Design and administer a brief survey to gather input from staff on what they would like the retreat to accomplish
  • Design agendas, facilitation guides, presentation materials, and other teambuilding retreat details in collaboration with NPI EXPAND senior leadership team
  • Facilitate experiential and participatory teambuilding activities US based NPI EXPAND staff during an in-person retreat which are:
  • Customized to the project team’s needs
    • Fun, but substantive and engaging
    • Explore team communication and work styles and group dynamics
    • Collaborative and problem solving based
    • Reflective, connect people to their work, and build relationships
  • Prepare post event report/reflections/recommendations for implementing knowledge gained during session
  • Liaise with NPI EXPAND's HQ staff throughout the activities as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred
  • Strong experience facilitating participatory sessions with staff from global health and/or international development sector organizations
  • Adept at facilitating in-person workshops focused on teambuilding and process improvement
  • Strong experience designing experiential, interactive, and participatory workshops
  • Knowledge of diversity, equality, and inclusion, gender issues, health, and USAID project management a strong plus
  • Experience working on USAID-funded or donor-funded projects strongly preferred


Anticipated Period of Performance and Level of Effort

This engagement is anticipated to be part-time during May and June 2022 for up to 7 days of LOE.
